Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release
KANNAPOLIS, N.C. (June 29, 2014) - Jeff McKenzie earned a win in his Class A debut as the Kannapolis Intimidators beat the Charleston RiverDogs, 7-3, on Sunday evening at CMC-NorthEast Stadium. Kannapolis (37-41, 8-3 Second Half) won its fifth straight game, clinching a series victory over the RiverDogs with the series finale still to come.
McKenzie (1-0) limited the RiverDogs to a run on five hits over 5.0 innings. The 2013 Western Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Year struck out two and walked one.
Offensively, Danny Hayes drove in three runs to pace Kannapolis, going 2-5 with two doubles and a run scored. Hunter Jones broke an 0-for-10 slump with a pair of doubles in a 3-hit night, going 3-4 with two runs scored.
The Intimidators catapulted in front by batting around in a 4-run third inning. Hayes tied the game with an RBI-double to score Jones, and Brett Austin - the White Sox fourth round pick in the June 2014 draft - cashed Cleuluis Rondon on a sac-fly for a 2-1 lead. T.J. Williams, who hit a walk off home run to win Saturday's game, added a 2-run base hit to extend the lead, 4-1. Williams has driven in six runs over the first three games of this series.
Kannapolis batted around again in a 3-run sixth inning, highlighted by a 2-run double from Hayes. Trey Michalczewski added a run-scoring groundout for his team-leading 48th RBI.
Relievers Matt Abramson, Alex Powers and Jose Brito combined to work the final 4.0 innings, limiting the RiverDogs to two more runs (one earned) on two hits.
Charleston took an early 1-0 lead in the second inning when Miguel Andujar hit a solo home run (7) to left field. RiverDogs starter Rookie Davis (3-8) took the loss, allowing four runs on four hits over 2.2 innings.
The Intimidators and RiverDogs wrap up this 4-game series on Monday at 7:05 p.m. Gates open at 6 p.m. For ticket and promotional information, call the F&M Bank Box Office at (704) 932-3267 or visit IntimidatorsBaseball.com.
