Asheville Tourists News Release
Asheville, NC--One day after Asheville and Greensboro lit up the offensive statistics, a pitcher's duel broke out at McCormick Field. The Tourists' Zach Jemiola and the Grasshoppers Sean Townsley went back and forth recording scoreless frames one after another. In the end, the visitors plated four runs in the top of the ninth off the Tourists bullpen to win 4-0. It was only the second time Asheville has been shut out this season.
Jemiola and Townsley were the story. Each pitcher worked eight shutout innings. Jemiola scattered five hits while Townsley allowed just four and recorded eight strikeouts. In the top of the fourth, Raimel Tapia made a leaping catch at the wall in center to prevent two runs from scoring. Asheville's best chance was in the bottom of the seventh. They had runners at first and second with one out, but back-to-back fly-outs ended the threat.
Once the top of the ninth rolled around, Jemiola was sitting at 83 pitches but did not come back out of the dugout. Instead, Asheville went with reliever Jefri Hernandez. After Hernandez allowed two straight singles to start the inning, he misplayed a bunt which resulted in Greensboro loading the bases with no outs.
The next batter, Rehiner Cordova, hit a groundball to Michael Benjamin. The Tourists third- baseman was playing shallow and decided to throw home to acquire the force out. The ball arrived at the glove of catcher Jose Briceno in plenty of time, but Briceno missed the catch. Two runs scored on the play. Joel Jimenez followed with a two-run single down the first base line.
Sam Alvis tossed a scoreless ninth to finish the game. Townsley earned the win and Jemiola a no-decision, despite putting together his best outing of the season. Asheville will look to rebound on Monday evening. A win for Asheville would ensure a series split. The first pitch takes place at 7:05pm.
