Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
LYNCHBURG, VA: The Delmarva Shorebirds (49-64) began their final 12-game road trip with a strong, 8-0 win over the Lynchburg Hillcats (58-56).
The Shorebirds were off to the races in the first inning as they jumped out to a 2-0 lead thanks to a two-run homer by Stiven Acevedo.
Delmarva would increase their lead in the fourth on a balk with runners at first and third as Matthew Etzel touched home. Acevedo then scored from second moments later on a single by Jalen Vasquez to make it 4-0 after four innings.
The offense would help set the tone for starting pitcher Juan Rojas who tossed his best outing in a Shorebirds uniform by going five innings, allowing no runs on just four hits with a pair of strikeouts.
With the score still 4-0 in the seventh, the Shorebirds would add to their lead with three, two-out runs. First, Matthew Etzel drew a bases-loaded walk to plate Adam Crampton followed by Stiven Acevedo who drove in two more runs with his fourth hit of the game as his single scored Enrique Bradfield Jr. and Tavian Josenberger to up the Delmarva advantage to 7-0.
The lead would continue to grow in the eighth as Jalen Vasquez scored from third base on a wild pitch, making it an 8-0 game.
Brayner Sanchez would relieve Raul Rangel in the ninth inning after Rangel tossed three scoreless innings of his own, and Sanchez would follow suit from the previous two pitchers and deal a 1-2-3 ninth inning to complete a dominant 8-0 victory over the Hillcats.
Juan Rojas (1-1) earned the win as the starter for the Shorebirds with Lynchburg starting hurler, Adam Tulloch (4-6) taking the loss.
Stiven Acevedo's second four-RBI game of the season, and first four-hit game boosted the offense on Tuesday night with the pitching staff, highlighted by Juan Rojas who threw five shutout innings to earn his first win as a Shorebird. Delmarva's blanking of the Hillcats was their seventh shutout victory of the season, and their fourth against Lynchburg.
Delmarva will now go for back-to-back wins on Wednesday night as they hand the ball to left-hander Deivy Cruz who will face Alonzo Richardson for the Hillcats. First pitch is slated for 6:30 p.m.
