Round Rock Express News Release

The City of Round Rock on Thursday gave its approval to a $1.6 million expansion of the Dell Diamond, home to the minor-league Round Rock Express baseball team.

The agreement calls for the city to contribute $800,000 of the funding by using hotel occupancy tax dollars, with the team contributing the other half. Construction is expected to begin in September.

Round Rock Express President and CEO Reid Ryan presented the almost 1,000-seat expansion proposal to the City Council in February, saying it would help attract a Triple-A baseball team to the city. The Express is a Double-A farm club for the Houston Astros.

Ryan is the son of principal team owner and Hall of Fame pitcher Nolan Ryan.

The Dell Diamond now has 7,816 permanent seats, with room for 3,500 more fans on the grass berm. Aside from 1,000 more seats, the proposed expansion would include six luxury suites holding 20 people each. The stadium now has 24 suites.

In 1998, Round Rock voters authorized the city to spend revenue from its hotel occupancy tax to help pay for the $25 million stadium. The Express contributed $17.6 million and the city of Round Rock $7.3 million. The city owns the stadium. The team has a 38-year lease.
