June 13, 2003 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Edmonton Trappers News Release

Third baseman Donny Leon was 3-for-5 with three runs scored, a double, a home run and three RBI as the Iowa Cubs downed the Edmonton Trappers 13-2 Thursday night at Sec Taylor Stadium in Des Moines. The Cubs earned the victory in the season series, taking three of the four games from the Trappers. After beginning the road trip by taking three of four from the Omaha Royals the Trappers finished with a 4-4 mark. The club is now 14-22 overall on the road and is 5-5 so far in June. It was a disappointing night for Trappers’ center fielder Terrmel Sledge, who went 0-for-4, ending his hitting streak at 20 games. The streak was the longest by an Edmonton player this season, was tied for the sixth longest in club history and was the second longest in the Pacific Coast League in 2003. Edmonton will begin an eight-game homestand on Friday night that will see the two clubs with the two best records in the PCL, the Sacramento River Cats and the Las Vegas 51s, visit TELUS Field. Sacramento will be the first club in, beginning a four-game set against the Trappers on Friday.

Nothing went right for Edmonton starter Hansel Izquierdo (1-1) in the first inning Thursday night as the Cubs scored eight times and sent 12 men to the plate. Second baseman Bobby Hill led off the frame with a double. Trenidad Hubbard then reached base on an infield single and Hill moved to third on an error by Trapper shortstop Anthony Medrano. Leon followed with his second home run of the series and his third of the season to give the Cubs a 3-0 lead. With one out Izquierdo hit Phil Hiatt with a pitch. Hiatt stole season and Nic Jackson drew a base on balls to put runners at first and second for Nate Frese, who singled to load the bases. Izquierdo then hit Keith McDonald with a pitch to force home Hiatt with the fourth run. Jackson was out at home as Juan Cruz bounced into a fielder’s choice, but Hill came through with his second double of the inning, plating Frese, McDonald and Cruz. Hill advanced to third on an error by Trapper right fielder Valentino Pascucci and then scored on a single by Hubbard that capped the inning. There were six Cubs’ hits, two Trapper errors, two hits batsmen and a walk in the bottom of the first inning alone.

Edmonton picked up their only two runs of the night in the third inning with Luis Figueroa singled to open the frame and then moved to second on a walk to Medrano. Sledge struck out, but Joe Vitiello reached on an error by Cruz that loaded the bases for Matt Cepicky, who doubled down the left field line, scoring Figueroa and Medrano. Iowa picked up their ninth run in the bottom of the third as Frese walked to open the inning and McDonald doubled to score him from first. They plated two more runs in the fourth inning off Izquierdo, who surrendered 11 runs on nine hits and two walks, while fanning two in 4.0 innings on the hill. Leon led off the frame with a single and scored on a home run by Chris Donnels. Blake Stein took over for Izquierdo in the fifth inning and yielded two more runs in his 3.0 innings of work. Leon doubled with one out in the sixth, advanced on a passed ball and later scored on a two-run single by Jackson that also plated Donnels with 13th and final Cubs’ run of the night.
