Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp News Release
HOOVER, Ala. â Fighting off early rainshowers, the Suns played another good all-around game in a 5-1 victory over the Birmingham Barons in front of 3,243 fans Tuesday at Hoover Metropolitan Stadium.
Suns starter Joel Hanrahan (10-4) earned the victory, pacing the team by allowing one run over six innings. He struck out five to take over the league lead from teammate Edwin Jackson.
The Suns boosted Hanrahan with two runs in the fourth inning, breaking a scoreless tie. Nick Alvarez smacked a double to left, scoring Tarrik Brock. Derek Michaelis followed with a single to right, scoring Alvarez, which gave Jacksonville a 2-0 advantage.
Jeremy Reed â who had three hits to lead all batters â scored the Barons' lone run on Scott Bikowski's RBI groundout in the fourth inning.
Brock and Michaelis each hit solo home runs off Barons starter Mitch Wylie in the sixth inning, giving the Suns (53-60 overall, 22-22 second half) a 4-1 advantage. Wylie (3-5) earned the loss, giving up four runs over six innings.
Shane Victorino singled home Victor Rodriguez in the seventh inning off reliever Ryan Meaux, padding the Suns' lead.
With their second consecutive 5-1 defeat, the Barons fall to 56-55 overall and 23-20 in the second half.
Right-hander Edwin Jackson (5-6, 3.46 ERA) is scheduled to face Barons righty Tetsu Yofu (8-6, 3.51) at 7 p.m. CT Wednesday at Hoover Metropolitan Stadium.
