Birmingham Barons News Release

BIRMINGHAM, AL – For the second straight night the Jacksonville Suns got an outstanding outing from their starter and beat the Barons by the same score of 5-1 in front of 3,243 fans on Tuesday night at the Hoover Met.

Joel Hanrahan (10-4) tossed six innings and gave up just one run on four hits while striking out five as he combined with two Jacksonville relievers in the win. Brian Steffek threw a scoreless seventh and eight and Jason Frasor finished it off with a scoreless ninth as the Suns took a 2-0 series lead and won their third in a row.

Mitch Wylie (3-5) started for the Barons and picked up the loss as he gave up four runs on six hits in six innings of work. Two of those runs came on solo homers by Tarrik Brock and Derek Michaelis in the sixth. The other runs came in the fourth on an RBI double by Nick Alvarez and a run scoring single by Michaelis. The Suns added an insurance run in the seventh off of reliever Ryan Meaux as Shane Victorino singled home Victor Rodriguez.

The lone run for the Barons came in the fourth inning as Birmingham cut the lead to 2-1 at the time. Jeremy Reed, who ended the night going 3-for-4 to raise his average to .403, singled to leadoff the inning and stole second to move into scoring position. Gabe Alvarez grounded out to second to move Reed to third before Scott Bikowski drove him home with groundout to third. Bikowski would later single to extend his hitting-streak to 13 straight games.

The Barons look to get back into the series as they send out RHP Tetsu Yofu (8-6, 3.51) to face RHP Edwin Jackson (9-4, 2.47). All the action can be heard on 101.1 FM "The Source" with Curt Bloom on the play-by-play.
