Spokane Chiefs News Release

Spokane, Wash. - The Spokane Chiefs are proud to announce that prospect Nathan Mayes has signed a WHL Standard Player Agreement. From Salmon Arm, B.C., Mayes was selected by the Chiefs in the third round (51st overall) of the 2021 WHL Prospects Draft.

"Nathan has tremendous upside as a big, mobile defenseman with strong leadership qualities," said Chiefs General Manager Scott Carter. "We are very pleased to sign him to a WHL agreement and officially welcome him to the Chiefs family."

Mayes, a 6-foot-3, 170-pound rearguard from Salmon Arm, B.C., has posted 16 points (4G-12A) in 15 games with Yale Hockey Academy U17 Prep this season and was recently named team captain.

Spokane's Assistant General Manager Jim Hammett further emphasized Mayes' mobility after selecting him last week, noting he is a "very smooth skater and (has) very good agility, especially at his size."

Mayes is the third prospect from the Chiefs' 2021 class to sign a WHL agreement, joining first-overall pick Berkly Catton and second-round choice Luka Shcherbyna. Signed WHL prospects from the 2021 draft are eligible to join their respective clubs as Affiliated Players for up to five games while their home club is still in season. Shcherbyna will first be eligible to play in Spokane full-time beginning with the 2022-23 season.
