Clinton LumberKings News Release
Clinton, IA - The Kane County Cougars scored four runs after an error by shortstop Ogui Diaz in the third inning and strolled to an 8-2 win over the Clinton LumberKings Sunday night at Alliant Energy Field. The Kings scored just two runs over six innings against Cougars' ace Kenny Smalley.
Starter Kenn Kasparek was strong through the first two innings, but ran into trouble in the third. Singles by Dusty Napoleon, Chris Berroa and Jason Christian loaded the bases with two outs. Kasparek got a ground ball that should have ended the inning, but Diaz let the ball roll between his legs, plating two runs. Steve Parker followed with a two-run single to right-center, giving the Cougars a 4-0 lead.
Kane County tacked on another run in the fourth on Leonardo Gil's RBI triple to right-center. An error by first-baseman Scott Savastano put Petey Paramore on in the fifth, and three batters later he'd score on a fielder's choice by Chris Berroa.
Kasparek (L, 4-5) lasted only 3.2 innings, his shortest outing since May 6 at Dayton. However, only one of his five earned runs were earned. Reliever Ryan Moorer gave up two more runs in the sixth as Jeremy Barfield doubled home Spina and later scored on a passed ball by catcher Travis Howell.
Clinton's only runs came in the fourth and sixth innings. Kris Sanchez took Smalley deep to right in the fourth for his eighth home run of the season, making it a 5-1 game. The Kings scored one more time as Luis Nunez walked in the sixth, moved to third on a double by Savastano and scored on a passed ball by Cougars' catcher Paramore.
Smalley (W, 7-3) allowed two runs, one earned on four hits over 6.0 innings, walking two while striking out four. Right-hander Brett Hunter struck out eight over 2.2 scoreless innings before lefty Trey Barham came on for the final out in the ninth.
The LumberKings (5-5) and Cougars (5-5) continue the series tomorrow night at Alliant Energy Field, first pitch scheduled for 7:00 PM. Right-hander Maikel Cleto (0-0) starts for Clinton against Kane County left-hander Pedro Figueroa (9-2). Listen to the game on AM 1390 KCLN in Clinton or live on the web at www.kcln.com.
