Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
July 5, 2009 - The Cedar Rapids Kernels caught a break from a sunny Sunday afternoon at Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium as a two-out error on a fly ball to right field by Beau Brooks, allowed Tyson Auer to scored the tying run from first base. After Brooks was replaced by pinch runner Chris Fox, Gabe Jacobo laced a double down the left field line to score Fox with the eventual game-winning run.
The rally made a winner out of Kernels reliever Christian Scholl (3-0) who struck out three over an inning of relief. Andrew Taylor walked one in the ninth, but earned his third save. Quad Cities reliever Joel Pichardo was tagged with the loss.
With two outs in the eighth inning and Auer at first, Brooks lifted a high fly ball to right field that Kyle Conley seemed to have measured, but lost in the bright afternoon sun at the last moment. The ball glanced off Conley's arm and fell to the turf as Auer, running with two outs, scored from first.
Kernels starter Ryan Chaffee allowed a run on three hits over 4.2 innings with two walks and three strikeouts. Matt Shoemaker worked 2.1 innings out of the Kernels pen, and allowed two runs (one earned) on two hits and struck out two. Quad Cities starter Brett Zawacki held the Kernels to two runs on five hits and struck out two over 5.1 innings.
Beau Brooks, Tyson Auer and Gabe Jacobo all had an RBI for the Kernels. Matt Crawford, batting from the leadoff spot, went 2-2 with two runs scored and Alexi Amarista was 2-3 with a double. Travis Mitchell was 2-4 with an RBI and Charlie Cutler and Jarred Bogany added an RBI.
The third game of this four game series between the Kernels and River Bandits is Monday night at 6:35 pm. Gates open at 5:30 pm and tickets may be purchased on-line at www.kernels.com The opinions expressed in this release are those of the organization issuing it, and do not necessarily reflect the thoughts or opinions of OurSports Central or its staff.
