West Michigan Whitecaps News Release
COMSTOCK PARK, MI - A record-setting performance by the West Michigan Whitecaps was the story Sunday afternoon at Fifth Third Ballpark in a 20-11 victory over the Dayton Dragons. The Whitecaps tied a franchise record for runs in game, and the âCaps set a new team mark for runs in an inning. West Michigan wins its fiftieth game of the season and the first two games of the series.
Whitecap hitters feasted on Dayton starter J.C. Sulbaran in the very first inning. The âCaps took advantage of a Dayton record six walks in the inning combined with six hits to score thirteen times. All nine Whitecaps' starters reached safely, and all scored a run in the first before an out was recorded.
West Michigan came within an out of batting around twice through the lineup.
Down 13-2, Dayton managed to put together an impressive comeback. The Dragons scored 3 times in the second and 4 times in the fourth. Byron Wiley stroked his second homerun of the game, a three-run shot, to make the score, 13-9.
The Whitecaps would answer with four runs of their own in the fifth. Jordan Lennerton provided an RBI, Ben Guez had an RBI double, and Mike Gosse slapped a two-run single to right to help the âCaps build a 17-9 lead.
Byron Wiley led off the sixth inning with a long home run to right center, his third of the game, and the Whitecaps lead was 17-10.
Dayton's Kyle Day blasted a solo shot to right in the top of the eighth. In the bottom of the inning, Bryan Pounds launched a triple to right center to put three runs on the board including the twentieth run.
Sunday was not a day for the pitchers. âCaps starter Brandon Hamilton lasted only 2 innings, allowing 5 runs on 5 hits with 2 walks and 3 strikeouts. Erik Crichton (3-0) was credited with the win.
J.C. Sulbaran took the loss. He falls to 2-2.
