Bees Score Eight Runs on Ten Hits But Lose

Burlington, IA (July 4, 2009) - The Burlington Bees lost to Wisconsin Sunday afternoon 10-8 at Community Field. The Bees had ten hits in the game but were just 2-13 at the plate with runners on in scoring position and allowed four unearned runs.

Wisconsin opened the scoring with one run in the top of the first inning. The Bees then tied the game in the bottom of the inning. With two outs, Eric Hosmer walked and then moved to third on a Jason Taylor double. On that play, an error was committed, which allowed Hosmer to score.

Wisconsin went on to score the next six runs to take a 7-1 lead entering the bottom of the fifth inning. In the fifth, the Bees scored three runs to get within two runs. With one out, Patrick Norris singled and stole second. Norris then scored from second on a wild pitch. Nick Van Stratten then singled, stole second and Hosmer walked to put runners on first and second. Taylor then hit a single to score Van Stratten. Hosmer scored when David Wood reached on an error.

Wisconsin scored one run in the seventh and led 8-4. The Bees got within two runs scoring two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. With one out, Van Stratten singled and moved to second when Hosmer was walked for the third time in the game. With two outs, Wood tripled to score both Van Stratten and Hosmer and the Bees trailed 8-6. Wisconsin got their four-run lead back answering with two runs in the top of the eighth.

The Bees scored their final two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. Shawn Griffin led the inning off with a single and moved to second on a Juan Rivera hit. Norris then reached on a Fielder's Choice, which also moved Griffin to third. Marc Maddox then walked to load the bases. Griffin scored on a wild pitch. Van Stratten then hit into an RBI ground-out to score Norris for the Bees' final run of the day.

Sam Runion got the start for the Bees and took the loss to move to 3-5. In five innings, he allowed seven runs, four of which were earned, on ten hits with three strikeouts and two walks. Derrick Saito pitched two innings allowing one run on three hits. Riquy Pena pitched the final two innings allowing two runs on one hit.

The Bees had ten hits. Van Stratten, Taylor, Wood and Rivera each had two hits. Wood had two RBI. Hosmer scored three runs while Van Stratten and Norris each scored two.
