Defenders Win 5-3 & Win Series 4-1

NEW BRITAIN, CT- Joey Martinez had the strikeout going as he fanned 10 in a 5-3 win over the New Britain Rock Cats.

The Defs set the tone in the second as they plated two runs in the frame. Carlos Sosa scored on a sacrifice fly off the stick of Olmo Rosario and Ryan Rohlinger crossed the dish on an RBI single by Ben Copeland.

Meanwhile, Joey Martinez was dealing. Through five, Martinez had allowed just one hit and struck out eight while walking one.

The Defs grew their advantage in the sixth when Kyle Haines doubled Rosario to the plate and Ben Copeland laced a single to send Haines home as Connecticut claimed a 4-0 lead.

Martinez finally showed he was human in the home half of the sixth when two runs came across on three hits. Martinez' ended up tossing six frames, allowed two runs on four hits, walked none and K'ed a season-high 10.

Copeland would drive in another run in the eighth on a groundout, his third of the day, as the Defenders made it 5-2.

The Rock Cats would get one more run in the eighth but it wasn't enough. Martinez equalized his record to 6-6 with the win, Zach Ward lost his fifth game and Justin Hedrick nailed down his third save.

The Defs will invite the Binghamton Mets into town for four games in three days. Tuesday's action will be a double dip starting at 5:05pm. Tickets are available for the contests at ctdefenders.com or by dialing the box office at (860) 887-7962.
