Connecticut Defenders News Release
NORWICH, CT- The Connecticut Defenders combined timely hitting with solid pitching and defense to walk away with a victory over the Reading Phillies Sunday afternoon, 6-5.
Starting pitcher Garrett Broshuis threw an effective five innings of work on Sunday afternoon, pitching to contact and trusting the eight men behind him. In his five innings, Broshuis allowed three runs (two earned), on six hits while he struck out two and walked none.
The Defenders offense was spread out but constant. Connecticut plated two runs in the first as Travis Denker laced an RBI triple to right-center to bring home Antoan Richardson. Eddy Martinez-Esteve ripped a two out single into left field to score Denker as the Defenders jumped ahead 2-0.
The Phils got onto the scoreboard in the second inning as Lou Marson brought home Juan Tejeda from second on a single to make the score 2-1.
Connecticut scored again in the third inning as Simon Klink drove in Denker to extend the lead, 3-1.
The Defenders stayed hungry in the fourth as they plated two runs in the frame. Denker brought home Dayton Buller on a sacrifice fly to right field and Dave Maroul cracked the hit column as he singled in Broshuis to open up the lead, 5-1
With a seemingly comfortable lead, Broshuis took the bump in the fifth and gave up two runs on four base hits but got through the fifth to make himself eligible for the win. Halfway home, the Defenders led 5-3.
Connecticut got one back in the home half of the sixth as Richardson lifted a sacrifice fly to left field to score Klink from third as the home team took a 6-3 advantage.
Reading would score one in the seventh and one in the eighth to make Connecticut uncomfortable with a one-run lead. Sergio Romo had closed the previous two games so manager Bien Figueroa had to look elsewhere for a save.
Kelvin Pichardo took the ball and set down the opposition in order as the Defenders walked away with another one-run win.
The Defenders will welcome the Bowie Baysox into town on Monday evening as they open up a three-game set against the Baltimore Oriole affiliate. Tickets are still available for the contest at ctdefenders.com or by calling the box office at (860) 887-7962.
