New Britain Rock Cats News Release

New Britain, CT - Brock Peterson's single to left field in the twelfth inning knocked in the winning run to give the Rock Cats a 5-4 win over Trenton. The 'Cats avoided a four-game sweep with the extra innings victory.

The Rock Cats took advantage of an error by Trenton shortstop Ramiro Pena, the third error of the game by the Thunder, that allowed leadoff batter Steve Tolleson to reach base. Tolleson advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Luke Hughes. Trevor Plouffe was hit by a pitch before Peterson stepped to the plate and delivered a single to score Tolleson.

Dustin Martin put the Rock Cats ahead 1-0 with a home run to right field in the first inning. It was Martin's first homer in Double-A.

Rock Cats starter Ryan Mullins shutdown the Thunder lineup until the fourth inning. Jose Tabata started off the inning with a leadoff single. Colin Curtis then reached on an error by first baseman Brock Peterson, but Curtis was forced out at second on Matt Carson's grounder. On the next play, Tabata was thrown out at home and it looked like Mullins would escape the jam. P.J. Pilittere delivered an RBI single, though, and Marcos Vechionacci added a single. Vechionacci was injured running down the baseline and left the game. With the bases loaded, Kevin Russo drew a walk to score Chris Malec to put the Thunder ahead, 2-1.

Carson added an RBI double for Trenton in the fifth to extend the lead, 3-1. In the bottom of the inning, Erik Lis blasted a solo shot to right field for his first Double-A homer to cut the lead, 3-2.

In the sixth, Trevor Plouffe led off the inning with a double and advanced to third on Martin's groundout. Plouffe then scored on an error by second baseman Kevin Russo to tie the game.

Matt Moses' RBI double in the eighth gave the Rock Cats the lead. Trenton retaliated in the ninth, however, when Reegie Corona drew a leadoff walk. He came around to score on a single by Carson that sent the game into extra innings.

Kyle Aselton (1-0) picked up the win for the Rock Cats with a scoreless twelfth. Joshua Schmidt (1-1) suffered the loss after pitching 1 2/3 innings.
