Aberdeen IronBirds News Release

August 29, 2005 - Tonight the Aberdeen IronBirds (24-41) were dealt a tough 10-6 loss against first place Staten Island (46-20). The IronBirds battled hard and put up another late fight but fell short, evening up their homestand record at 3-3.

Staten Island quickly jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first and would stay ahead until the eighth inning when the IronBirds would tie the game.

The first run of the game was driven in by 2005 first round draft pick Brandon Snyder. Snyder was 2-3 with 2 RBI and a run scored in his Aberdeen debut. Zach Davis, Rob Marconi and Cory Shafer also had two hits a piece.

In the bottom of the eighth inning, the IronBirds would plate the tying run off of a bases loaded walk with two outs. One pitch later, Brad Wiggins broke for home on a wild pitch with Mark Fleisher up. The ball caromed back towards the plate, where the Staten Island catcher threw the ball to the pitcher in plenty of time. Wiggins slid short and jumped over the tag, but was ruled out by the home plate ump to the dissatisfaction of 6,277 IronBirds fans.

Perhaps the brightest spot in the night was the relief pitching by Ryan Schwabe and locally produced Brandon Erbe. Schwabe pitched to the tune of a scoreless 3.2 innings while striking out two Staten Island batters. Erbe, recently called up from Bluefield, threw his first pitches as an IronBird tonight. Although he received the loss, the young righty has been hyped heavily because of his 97 MPH fastball.

Tomorrow the IronBirds will play their final game in the series against Staten Island before hitting the road for a five game road trip.
