ONEONTA, NY --- If the Oneonta Tigers go on to win the Stedler Division, they might want to thank the Vermont Expos for the help.
Oneonta scored five runs in the first and third innings on Monday night and went on to defeat Vermont for the 13th time in 14 meetings this season with an 11-4 victory in New York-Penn League action at Damaschke Field.
The Tigers jumped all over Vermont starter Ricky Shefka in the first inning with five runs on four hits. The big hit in the inning was a three-run double from Cory Middleton for a 4-0 lead. Oneonta added five more runs off Shefka in the third inning, including back-to-back RBI doubles from Middleton and Matt Joyce and a two-run homer from Matt Joyce.
After Oneonta added another run in the sixth off reliever Edward Rodriguez, the Expos ended a 16-inning scoreless streak in the top of the seventh on a double from Rolando Arnedo and an RBI single from Lorvin Louisa. Vermont added three more runs in the ninth as Leonard Davis, who went 3-for-4, led off with a double and scored on a groundout and Rob Sandora smashed a two-run double.
Tiger starter Burke Badenhop (5-4) allowed one run on five hits over seven innings for the victory, the seventh win in seven games for Oneonta over Vermont at Damaschke Field this season.
Shefka (1-2), making his first appearance for Vermont since August 10th, allowed 10 runs on 10 hits in just 2.2 innings. Rodriguez and Oscar Lira combined to give up one run on two hits with two walks and five strikeouts in 5.1 innings of relief for the Expos.
The loss was the five straight overall and the ninth straight road loss for Vermont, which has not won on the road since August 10th at Batavia. The defeat also drops the Expos to 7-24 on the road this season.
Vermont (21-45), all done for the season with Oneonta (42-23), now head to Lowell for a five-game series against the Spinners. Lowell begins the five-game set with the Expos in second-place in the Stedler Division, five games behind Oneonta and in a fight with Williamsport for the wild card spot.
The Expos and Spinners will open the five-game series at Lowell on Tuesday night and Boston Red Sox reliever Keith Foulke is scheduled to pitch in the game for the Spinners on a rehab assignment.
