Dayton Gems - Weekend Review
Published on January 31, 2011 under Central Hockey League (CHL)
Dayton Gems News Release
The Dayton Gems had a rough weekend as they dropped all three of their games. In all three games, the Gems were able to overcome deficits and at least tie the game in the third period. But fate was not on the Gems' side as all three games turned into losses for Dayton.
Things started out on the rocky trail Friday night when the Gems dropped a 5-3 decision to Wichita. After falling behind 2-0 in the first period, Dayton scored three unanswered goals to take a 3-2 advantage. But Wichita scored three goals in the third period - two by AJ Gale - giving the Thunder the 5-3 win.
The Gems tried the comeback route again on Saturday at Evansville. After scoring the opening goal of the game, Dayton allowed the IceMen to score four straight goals and fall behind 4-1. In the final two periods, Mike Vaskivuo scored two goals and Jonathan Ornelas added another one to tie the game at 4-4.
The game stayed that way through overtime and into the shootout. Dayton was unsuccessful in recording a goal in the shootout and Evansville's Braden Desmet scored the lone goal of the shootout to give the IceMen the 5-4 win.
The weekend was rounded out on Sunday with an afternoon loss to Wichita. After trailing 1-0 early in the game, Dayton was able to take a 3-2 lead with less than five minutes remaining in the game.
In the final four minutes of the game, the Thunder scored a pair of goals to hand the Gems a 4-3 loss.
The loss is the fourth straight for the Gems, their longest such streak of the season.
Upcoming Games
The Gems have just two games this week.
On Wednesday, February 2, Dayton will have a home game against Bloomington. The action will start at 7 p.m. at Hara Arena
Dayton will then travel to Quad City on Saturday for an 8 p.m. matchup against the Mallards.
Events this week
This is a slow week for the Gems in terms of mingling with the public. Players will be appearing at Fox and Hound in Beavercreek on Monday, Jan. 31 from 8:45-11 p.m. to mingle with customers and fans as they judge local singing talent.
The Kettering Medical Center is proud to be the official title sponsor of the Gems for the 2010-11 season.
