Dawgs Extend Point Streak to Nine But See Winning Streak Snapped at Eight in 4-3 Shootout Loss

SOUTHAVEN, MS - Brad Barone made 47 saves and Maxime Guyon scored twice but the Rail Yard Dawgs fell in a shootout to the Mississippi RiverKings, 4-3, Saturday night at Landers Center. Roanoke extended its point streak to nine games by reaching overtime but saw its winning streak snapped at eight.

With the game tied at one entering the third period, the Rail Yard Dawgs won the opening faceoff and sprung Guyon down the right wing. He fired a snap shot low on the glove side and beat Tyler Green to give Roanoke a 2-1 lead.

Mississippi answered about two and a half minutes later. Ryan Salkeld took the puck in the left wing corner and carried it toward the net. He put a move on and tucked the puck inside the post to tie the game at two.

Roanoke didn't wait long to regain the lead however as Cam Bakker forced a turnover and sprung Colin Murray and Guyon in on a breakaway. Murray fired a pass to Guyon streaking to the back post and he tapped it in to put the Dawgs back on top.

The RiverKings struck back late in the third on a power play. They gained the zone with a modified odd-man rush and Brantley Sherwood went give-and-go with Shane Bennett. Sherwood finished on a one-touch in tight and tied the game at three.

It remained a 3-3 game through the end of regulation and the Dawgs and RiverKings moved into overtime. Barone made a highlight-reel save on Salkeld late in the OT period to keep Mississippi off the board and the game was forced to a shootout.

Roanoke failed to cash in on each of its first four shootout tries and the RiverKings put the pressure on in the fourth round when Devin Mantha snapped one past Barone. With the Dawgs needing a goal to stay alive, Green stopped Guyon and Mississippi took the extra point.

The RiverKings outshot the Rail Yard Dawgs, 50-19, in their win. Roanoke saw its franchise-record and 2017-18 SPHL league-best winning streak snapped at eight but have now recorded points in nine straight games.

Mississippi started the scoring in the first minute of the first period on a Bennett wrister that sailed through traffic. Roanoke was able to tie the game late in the second period when Matt Beer deflected a shot from the point on the power play.

Barone made 47 saves and Guyon recorded his first two goals as a Rail Yard Dawg. Roanoke moved to 19-19-4 with the shootout loss while Mississippi improved to 20-19-2. The Rail Yard Dawgs will return to action on Friday night in Pensacola against the Ice Flyers. Puck drop at the Pensacola Bay Center is scheduled for 7:05 PM CST.
