Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WINSTON-SALEM, NC (JUNE 6, 2010) - Eduardo Escobar's tenth inning RBI single sent the Dash to a 4-3 walk-off win over the Kinston Indians on Sunday evening. It was the second straight walk-off victory for Winston-Salem, which swept the four-game home series against the K-Tribe.
Sunday's game started in similar fashion to Saturday's, with Kinston (29-28) grabbing an early lead thanks to a soft single and poor Dash defense. Lucas Montero greeted Winston starter Stephen Sauer with a ground ball to right field for a single. Karexon Sanchez followed with a grounder to Seth Loman, whose throw to second pulled Escobar off the second base bag for an error. Two batters later, both Montero and Sanchez scored on Abner Abreu's double to right, putting the K-Tribe ahead 2-0.
Winston-Salem (38-19) halved the Indians lead with a run in the second when Seth Loman scored from third on a wild pitch from starter Joey Mahalic. Loman was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, the 20th time he's been drilled this season.
The Dash grabbed its first lead in the fifth with Mahalic still pitching. Justin Greene led off with a double and scored two batters later on an RBI two-bagger off the bat of Escobar to tie the game. After a strikeout of Jon Gilmore, Kinston manager Aaron Holbert decided to remove Mahalic and bring in lefty Chris Jones to face left-handed hitting Seth Loman. The big first baseman made Holbert regret his decision, as he drilled the first pitch he saw to center field for a triple, sending Escobar homeward and giving the Dash a 3-2 lead.
Kinston tied it up in the top of the sixth on a Doug Pickens RBI single against Sauer. The sinkerballer did not get a decision after allowing three runs (two earned) over six innings.
Both teams had a plethora of chances to score over the later innings, but failed to take advantage of men in scoring position. Winston-Salem left 15 men on base during the game, and Kinston left 11.
After Kyle Bellamy (3-0) pitched out of a jam for a scoreless tenth inning, the Dash offense got to work in the bottom of the tenth against Brian Grening (2-2). The K-Tribe reliever hit Drew Garcia to start the inning and walked Justin Greene. Both moved into scoring position after a sacrifice bunt and Holbert brought on David Roberts to work out of the two-on, one-out situation.
With the infield in all around, Escobar grounded a 2-2 pitch up the middle, just under the glove of shortstop Ronald Rivas. Garcia scored from third and the Dash celebrated its second walk-off win in 20 hours. Justin Greene's solo home run in the bottom of ninth inning on Saturday night also gave Winston a walk-off win.
The Dash has won five of its last six and reduced its magic number to nine with the victory.
Winston-Salem begins a three-game road trip at Myrtle Beach on Monday night. RHP Nate Jones (4-2, 4.94) looks to rebound from his worst start of the season against LHP Brett Oberholtzer (2-3, 5.03). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. from BB&T Coastal Field. Fans can tune into the audio webcast beginning at 6:45 on www.wsdash.com.
