Frederick Keys News Release
On a Sunday afternoon that got off to a late start following an hour and 22-minute rain delay, the Keys battled from behind all day and finally took the lead in the eighth and prevailed 6-5 over Lynchburg. With the win the Keys completed their first series sweep of the year and won their fifth straight game for the first time since August of 2006. Frederick also improved to 34-23, the first time they have been 11 games over .500 this year. The Hillcats fell to 25-33 following the loss.
Lynchburg jumped on Drake right from the start. With two out and one on, 3B Carlos Mendez singled to start the two-out rally. 1B Neftali Soto doubled over the head of the centerfielder Kyle Hudson to give Lynchburg a two-run advantage before the Keys ever came to the plate.
Frederick quickly erased that lead in the bottom of the first.
With one out and CF Xavier Avery on first, 1B Joe Mahoney hit a two-run blast to rightfield to tie up the game. Mahoney's homerun was his seventh of the year. He hit seven homers in 108 games last season with Delmarva last season. Sunday was his 51st game of the year with Frederick.
Lynchburg regained the lead in the top of the second on an unearned run. LF Kevyn Feiner reached on an error by 3B Billy Rowell to leadoff the inning. Following a single by CF Efrain Contreras and a sac bunt by C Jordan Wideman, RF Josh Fellhauer grounded out to first but it brought home Feiner from third to give the Hillcats the lead for a second time today.
The Keys tied up the game in the bottom of the fourth as RF Ronnie Welty drove home Kyle Hudson on fielder's choice.
The Hillcats took the lead back for the third time of the afternoon in the fourth inning on a two-run homerun by Efrain Contreras.
Frederick battled back though to retake the lead in the eighth. The Keys scored a run in the sixth and then plated two in the eighth to take a 5-4 lead. 2B Miguel Abreu doubled with one out in the eighth to start the rally. Following a Billy Rowell strikeout, SS Bobby Stevens singled to left to bring home Abreu from second. Stevens advanced to second on the throw by the Lynchburg LF Kevyn Feiner. C Brian Ward blooped a single into rightfield that brought home Stevens. The 5-4 lead was the first of the day.
With the two eighth inning runs, the Keys have outscored their opponents 48-12 in eighth-inning this year.
RHP Jose Diaz closed out the ninth for his seventh save of the season. The Frederick bullpen did not allow a run in the 13 innings over the four-game series against the Hillcats.
Frederick will head on the road Monday night to take on Northern Division foe, the Potomac Nationals. LHP Rick Zagone (2-5, 3.55) will start for the Keys while RHP Brad Peacock (1-6, 4.68) will get the nod for the P-Nats.
The Keys return home on Thursday, June 11, when they take on the Salem Red Sox on Thirsty Thursday. For tickets call 1-877-8-GO-KEYS or purchase online at www.frederickkeys.com.
