Late Rally Lifts Keys to Sweep of Cats

A pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth inning gave Frederick a 6-5 win over Lynchburg at Harry Grove Stadium on Sunday to complete a four-game series sweep.

Lynchburg jumped on the board early with a a pair of runs in the first inning. Neftali Soto laced a two-run double into left field with two down in the inning. Frederick answered with two runs of their own in the bottom of the inning to knot up the ballgame at two a piece. Joe Mahoney hit his sixth homer of the season over the wall in right to tie the game.

The Hillcats took the lead back in the top of the second inning with an unearned run when Josh Fellhauer hit an RBI ground out. In the bottom of the third inning the Keys would score another run to to the game at three. Ronnie Welty drove-in the run with a ground out. The Cats bounced back again with two more runs in the top of the fourth inning to take their third advantage of the game.

The Keys began their comeback in the sixth inning when they plated a run on an error by Alex Buchholz. It stayed 5-4 until the bottom of the eighth inning when a seeing eye single by Bobby Stevens tied the game and then a bloop single by Brian Ward gave the Keys the lead for good.

Donnie Joseph took a blown save and the loss (0-1) for Lynchburg (24-33). The win went to lefty Cole McCurry (2-2)for Frederick (34-23) who has now won five games in a row. This series marked the first time this season the Cats have been swept in a four-game set.

The Hillcats begin a three-game series with the Red Sox on Monday night at 7:05 p.m. in Salem. Right-hander Jordan Hotchkiss (3-0, 1.50) will get the nod for the Cats opposite fellow righty Brock Huntzinger (5-3, 2.83) for the Sox.
