Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WINSTON-SALEM, NC (AUGUST 15, 2011) - Winston-Salem continued its offensive clinic in recent BB&T Ballpark games by pounding out 18 runs on 29 hits in two games, both wins against Lynchburg on Monday night. The Dash won game one, the completion of a suspended game from June 28, 10-0, and beat the Hillcats 8-3 in the originally scheduled game on Monday
The Dash (29-21, 61-59) got on the board early and often in the resumption of a suspended game from June 28. The ballgame was resumed in the bottom of the first inning, and Tyler Saladino walked against pitcher David Hale. Jared Mitchell followed with a double to put runners at second and third. Brady Shoemaker then drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to left field, and Ian Gac singled home Mitchell to put the Dash up by a pair. Shoemaker, who wasn't on the Dash roster when the game started, was inserted into the lineup in the spot previously occupied by former outfielder Jose Martinez.
Andre Rienzo started the resumption of the game, but was credited with a relief appearance. Rienzo scattered base runners throughout the outing, but was mostly dominant, tying a season high with nine strikeouts in five scoreless innings.
Offensively, Winston-Salem picked up where they left off in the last home stand and struck again in the fifth inning. Saladino bunted aboard to start the inning, and with one out moved to second on Shoemaker's single. Gac then walked to load the bases for Andy Wilkins, who drove in two runs with a single. Mike Blanke followed with a sac fly to center field that scored Gac and extended the lead to 5-0.
Winston wasn't done at the plate. In the seventh, the long ball added more insurance. Shoemaker singled with one out before Gac blasted his 31st home run of the season. Wilkins then missed a home run by a few feet and ended up at second with a double. One batter later, Nick Ciolli belted his tenth homer of the season to put the Dash up by nine.
In the eighth, Saladino reached on an error by Hillcats shortstop Andrelton Simmons and came around to score on a Wilkins sac fly to left.
Rienzo combined with reliever Leroy Hunt, and the game's original starter Matt Wickswat to toss another shutout at BB&T Ballpark. It was the fifth consecutive shutout thrown in Winston-Salem, and the winning team compiled an aggregate score of 51-0. Rienzo (5-4) got the win to move above .500 on the season, while Hale (3-5) was hit with the loss.
Game two had a similar flare. Mitchell and Wilkins his successive singles with one out in the first inning, and both scored on a two-run single by Shoemaker.
In the second, Daniel Wagner reached on a single to start the inning, and came around to score on Wilkins' single. Winston loaded the bases in the inning with Mitchell at third, Wilkins at second, and Gac at first. Shoemaker drew a 2-1 count before aggravating an injury and leaving the game. Kyle Colligan pinch hit and drew a bases loaded walk to score one more. Ciolli then drove in the fifth Dash run by reaching on a fielder's choice.
The Dash capped the evening's scoring when Colligan walked in the fourth and scored on Juan Silverio's double. Silverio crossed home when Kevin Dubler hit his third homer with the Dash. Dubler now has a hit in each of the nine games he's played with Winston-Salem.
Lynchburg (20-30, 50-70) scored three times in the night cap, once on Joey Terdoslavich's home run in the fourth off Dash starter Ryan Buch, and twice more when Keenan Wiley hit a two-run single in the sixth inning.
Buch (3-4) made his first start for the Dash since June 25. He went on the disabled list two days later. In five innings, Buch gave up one run (earned) on five hits and struck out two to get the win. Hillcats starter Gary Moran (1-1) was hit with the loss after 1.1 innings where he gave up five runs (all earned) on right hits. He left with an apparent injury.
Winston-Salem and Lynchburg continue their series on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. at BB&T Ballpark. LHP Joe Serafin (4-9, 5.37) is scheduled to make the start for Winston-Salem opposite RHP Caleb Brewer (---, ---).
