CarL1 Myrtle Beach Pelicans

Birds Erase Big Deficit, Fall Late

August 15, 2011 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

SALEM, VA - David Mailman drove a two-run homer out to the opposite field in the bottom of the tenth inning, saving his team from blowing an early five-run lead and lifting the Salem Red Sox to an 8-6 walk-off win over the Pelicans in Monday night's series opener of three at Salem Memorial Ballpark.

Mailman's walk-off homer came during reliever Colby Killian's third inning of work for the Pelicans after Myrtle Beach's offense had very nearly pulled off an unlikely come-from-behind win. The Pelicans trailed 5-0 after Salem's big bottom of the third inning against Myrtle Beach starter Chad Bell during which Bell struck out the first two batters and then allowed six straight to reach, four via extra-base hits, and five to score. In fact, the inning only ended after Alex Valdez was cut down trying to extend his RBI double into a triple with two outs.

The Pelicans chipped away against Salem starter Ryan Pressly and reliever Pete Ruiz in the game's middle innings, though, scratching three runs against Pressly in the fifth, two on an Andrew Clark double, before the right-hander departed with an apparent injury with two outs. Myrtle Beach got two more off of Ruiz in the sixth to tie the game on Jared Prince's RBI single and Clark's bases-loaded walk to completely erase the early 5-0 Salem advantage.

In the seventh, the Pelicans took their lone lead of the night and nearly rode it to the winner's circle. Ryan Strausborger singled and went to third base on a sacrifice bunt by Jared Hoying and infield single by Santiago Chirino before coming across on Andres James's fielder's choice grounder to first when Miles Head couldn't get the ball to the plate quickly enough to nab the go-ahead run. Strausborger dragged his hand over the plate behind Salem catcher Josue Peley to give his team a 6-5 lead.

The run wasn't enough, however, as Killian surrendered the game-tying tally with two outs and two strikes on Heiker Meneses in the eighth. Salem's second baseman doubled home Mailman, the third-year Salem Sox outfielder, whose blast ended the affair two innings later. Mailman's sixth homer of the season off of Killian (0-1) gave the Red Sox just their third win in their last 12 tries against Myrtle Beach.

Jordan Flasher (1-0) earned the win for the Red Sox in his first Carolina League appearance after pitching a scoreless top of the tenth.

Tuesday night, the Pelicans look to even the series when they send lefty Miguel De Los Santos (4-3, 3.24) against Salem southpaw Drake Britton (1-12, 7.14) at 7:05. Britton's 12 losses are tied for fourth-most in all of Minor League Baseball, but his lone win of the year came at the expense of the Pelicans back on May 7 at Salem Memorial Ballpark. He's taken losses in each of his two other subsequent appearances against Myrtle Beach this year on May 25 and July 14 at BB&T Coastal Field.

Tickets for all Pelicans home games can be purchased by visiting the BB&T Coastal Field box office, the Tickets page at MyrtleBeachPelicans.com, or by calling (843)918-6000 or (877)918-TIXX.
