Frederick Keys News Release
After skipping his last scheduled start, LHP Nathan Moreau tossed a gem in his return to the rotation on Monday night. Moreau tossed six scoreless innings as the Keys took the series opener against the Blue Rocks, 3-1. SS Manny Machado put Frederick in front early with a two-run blast in the first and C Brian Ward added a solo shot in the seventh. With the win, the Keys improved to 72-47 on the year and matched their win total from the 2010 season.
Nathan Moreau started the evening off on the right foot as he struck out two in the opening frame. Manny Machado helped out his pitcher in the home half of the first as he stepped to the plate with one on and one out. Facing RHP Tim Melville, Machado blasted a 2-0 offering deep the left-center. Machado's fourth home run in Frederick put the Keys ahead by two.
The two-run lead was plenty for Moreau as he kept the Blue Rocks off the scoreboard. On the night, Moreau scattered five hits over six shutout innings. The Lilburn, GA native struck out six and walked none en route to his 11th victory of the season. Monday night was also the first time this season Moreau did not walk a batter in a start.
In the bottom of the seventh, Brian Ward hit a solo shot off LHP Allen Caldwell with one down in the inning. Ward's homer was his seventh of the season. In his previous two professional seasons, Ward had a combined three home runs.
RHP Justin Moore and LHP Chris Petrini closed out the Keys' victory.
The Keys and Blue Rocks will play game two of the three game set on Tuesday night in Frederick. LHP Jake Pettit (5-0, 1.07) will take the hill for the Keys while Wilmington will counter with RHP Elisaul Pimentel (5-7, 3.77). First pitch from Harry Grove Stadium is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
