Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WINSTON-SALEM, NC (SEPTEMBER 3, 2010) - The Hillcats gave their most spirited effort of the series, but it wasn't enough to stop the Dash from picking up a 6-4 win on Friday night at BB&T Ballpark. With the victory, Winston-Salem won its eighth straight game, swept the four-game series, and finished a perfect 7-0 on the final home stand of the regular season.
The Dash (36-28, 79-55) scored early again, plating a pair in the second inning. Nick Ciolli doubled and Ozzie Lewis singled with one out. Jason Bour and Drew Garcia followed with RBI singles to give Winston a 2-0 lead.
Lynchburg (30-35, 59-75) used the long ball to tie the game. Kevyn Feiner hit a solo shot in the third inning off Terry Doyle, his second home run of the season. Neftali Soto also hit a solo homer in the fourth to even the contest at two apiece.
Big innings had been a theme for the Dash all series long, and Friday was no different. The Winston offense was getting its second look at Josh Ravin, a right-hander who had allowed just one earned run in 22.2 innings since his promotion to the Carolina League. After Bour led off the inning by reaching on a Jose Gualdron fielding error, Garcia blasted a two-run home run over the right field seats to help the Dash re-claim its lead.
Later in the inning, Ravin (2-1) hit Kenny Williams, Jr. and walked Jose Martinez and both moved into scoring position on a wild pitch. Jon Gilmore followed with a single to centerfield to score both men and make it 6-2 Dash.
The Hillcats got RBI singles from Soto and Henry Rodriguez to get to within two runs, but the Dash bullpen held strong over the final four innings and Lynchburg never seriously threatened the Winston lead.
Brandon Kloess pitched two perfect innings to pick up his first Carolina League save. He preserved the win for Doyle (8-8), who allowed four runs on eight hits in five innings.
Ravin suffered his first loss after giving up six runs (five earned) in 3.1 innings.
Winston won all seven of its games on the home stand to improve to 47-21 at BB&T Ballpark this season. The team won 16 of its 20 games with the Hillcats, sweeping four of the six series. Winston outscored Lynchburg in this series 33 runs to six.
The Dash's first round playoff opponent was finalized on Friday. Salem lost to clinch a postseason berth for the Kinston Indians, who also lost. Winston leads the K-Tribe by two games in the division with one more series left for each team.
Next up for the Dash is a long series at Salem beginning Saturday. The two teams will play four and a half games in three days. They will resume their seven-inning suspended game from August 18 with the Red Sox leading 1-0 in the fourth inning. After the completion of that contest, the teams will play another seven-inning game. First pitch of the first game is scheduled for 5:05 p.m. on Saturday. The audio broadcast will shortly before game one on www.wsdash.com .
