Sappelt Named Southern League MVP

Former Hilllcat Dave Sappelt was named MVP of the Double-A Southern League yesterday. Sappelt led the league with a .361 batting average and .416 on-base percentage, and is still third in the league in slugging percentage (.548). He started the season with Advanced-A Lynchburg before rising as high as Triple-A Louisville in early August.

Sappelt spent less than a month with the Hillcats before his promotion to Double-A Carolina. In 19 games in Lynchburg, he hit .282 and stole six bases. He made his first appearance in Double-A April 30. He hit early and often with the Mudcats.

Sappelt was named to the Southern League Midseason All-Star Team and currently leads the Southern League in batting average and slugging percentage, even though he's been promoted. His .361 batting average will be the highest in Carolina Mudcats history. He had nine home runs and 61 RBI.

He was promoted to Triple-A Louisville August 12 and hasn't stopped hitting. Through Thursday's game, Sappelt had a .311 batting average in 21 games, including a five-hit performance against Indianapolis August 21.

Overall this season, Sappelt has hit a collective .340 with nine home runs, 71 RBI and 25 stolen bases. The leads all Reds minor leaguers in hitting and ranks fifth in RBI and steals.

Sappelt was drafted in the ninth round by the Cincinnati Reds of the 2008 MLB First-Year Player Draft.
