Salem, VA - Having managed only four hits on Wednesday and five hits on Thursday, the Salem Sox mustered a half dozen on Friday night. Unfortunately, Salem went hitless with runners in scoring position and could not move a baserunner past second all night long, falling to Potomac 5-0 in the series finale at Lewis-Gale Field. The setback is Salem's 18th in its last 24 games and ends the hope for a miracle run to the playoffs, as Kinston clinched a postseason berth with Salem's loss.

With zero run support, Stolmy Pimentel suffered the loss, falling to 9-11, despite pitching brilliantly. The 20-year old righthander allowed just one run on five hits over six innings, matching a season-high with eight strikeouts. Pimentel retired the final seven he faced and 11 of the last 12 to keep the Sox in the game, yet the gap widened against the Red Sox bullpen and Salem's offense remained subdued by the Nationals' staff.

Potomac lefthander Danny Rosenbaum shrunk his ERA to 2.09 with six scoreless innings, surrendering only four singles while striking out four and not walking anyone. Zach Dials tossed two scoreless out of the pen, with AJ Morris slamming the door in a 1-2-3 ninth to complete the shutout.

Potomac scored an early run off Pimentel in the second when Sean Rooney doubled to begin the inning and Sean Nicol singled him in to give the Nats a 1-0 lead. The score remained 1-zip into the seventh, when Robby Jacobsen doubled off Will Latimer, moved to third on a sac bunt from Chris Curran, and scored on a fielder's choice from Dan Lyons.

Up 2-0 into the eighth, the Nats added three more against Latimer, with Tyler Moore belting a solo shot, his league leading 30th of the year, to make it 3-0. Following Rooney's second double of the game, Jacobsen clocked a two-run homer to give Potomac a five-run lead.

Adalberto Ibarra owned three of Salem's six hits, going 3-4 for his first multi-hit game in the Carolina League. The only other knocks were singles by Alex Hassan and Jon Hee and a double from Ronald Bermudez. In three September games, the Sox have hit just .160, and in the last 11, Salem has gone just 7-72 (.097) with runners in scoring position.

Salem is still competing to finish with one of the top full-season records in the Carolina League, entering the final series of the year with 70 wins and 63 losses. The Sox and Dash will determine five results in three wacky days to finish the year, starting on Saturday with a quasi-doubleheader beginning at 5:05 at Lewis-Gale Field. Game one will be the resumption of a suspended contest from August 18, with Salem leading Winston 1-0 in the top of the fourth inning. Thirty minutes after that game concludes, the Sox will send Caleb Clay to the mound against Stephen Sauer for a seven-inning matchup. The final postgame fireworks display of the 2010 season will greet the conclusion of the nightcap!
