Kinston Indians News Release
The K-Tribe's magic number is one to clinch a playoff spot with five games to go headed into tonight's 7 pm series finale at Frederick. Kinston is on a season-high nine game winning streak.
Dressed To The Nines - Kinston won their season-best ninth straight game on Thursday night, beating Frederick 5-3 in ten innings. The Indians have won 14 of their last 17 contests. It is their first nine-game win streak since 2004, when manager Torey Lovullo led them to a 10-0 start on the way to a Carolina League Championship. That team was boosted by future Major Leaguers Ryan Garko and Michael Aubrey at the plate and Fausto Carmona on the mound. The nine wins in a row matches the longest winning streak in the Carolina League this year, as Winston-Salem won nine straight from April 14-22.
Magic Number Sliced to One - Thursday night's victory combined with Salem's loss shaved the K-Tribe's magic number to one to clinch a spot in the Carolina League playoffs with five games to play. Myrtle Beach was eliminated from playoff contention last night. Winston-Salem is also hot, as they are on a seven-game win streak. Kinston is one game back of the Dash for the second half Southern Division title. Should Winston-Salem win both halves, they would play game five of the Division Series if necessary at home. If a different team wins the second half, the game five would be on the second half champions' home field.
With a Win Tonight - The K-Tribe would clinch their first playoff appearance since 2007. It would mark the 17th time in 24 seasons with the Indians organization that Kinston has reached the playoffs. Last night's win clinched a winning season for the 19th time in 24 seasons with Cleveland.
