Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
WINSTON-SALEM N.C. - In the antithesis of Saturday night's middle game for the Pelicans and Winston-Salem Dash, the drama late came from a lack of offense in Sunday's series finale.
The Dash held on for a 4-3 lead with all seven combined runs coming from the second through fourth innings in the final game of three at Wake Forest Baseball Park. With the series victory, Winston-Salem picked up another game on the Pelicans in the Carolina League Southern Division.
Myrtle Beach grabbed an early advantage when Cody Johnson tripled to lead off the second inning and scored on a Benji Johnson groundout two batters later. In the bottom of the inning, the Dash took a lead they would not relinquish, plating a trio of runs, the first coming on a Salvador Sanchez solo blast. With two outs, Adam Ricks singled and scored on a Kent Gerst double. Dale Mollenhauer's single then brought Gerst home for a 3-1 advantage. An inning later, Justin Greene worked a leadoff walk, stole second and scored on a Brent Morel single to make it a 4-1 Dash lead. All four Winston-Salem runs came off Pelicans starter Brandon Beachy (2-1), who went three innings and surrendered six hits and two walks while striking out two.
The Pelicans cut the Dash lead to one with a pair of runs in the fourth, cashing in Michael Fisher's leadoff with a Donell Linares double. Linares scored two batters later on a Gerry Rodriguez single to make the score 4-3, but that's as close as Myrtle Beach would get.
Dash starter Anthony Carter allowed three runs on five hits over six innings, striking out eight with one walk. Carter (10-4) became the first Carolina League pitcher to hit double-digits in wins this year. Behind him, Hector Santiago and Miguel Socolovich (7) combined to close the book on the Pelicans over the final three innings. The Birds got the tying run to scoring position in the fifth and sixth and got a runner on in the ninth to no avail.
Myrtle Beach's six-game road trip continues tomorrow with the first of three against the Potomac Nationals. The Pelicans return home Thursday, welcoming the Kinston Indians for a four-game series from July 30 through August 2. Tickets for all Pelicans home games are available at the BB&T Coastal Field box office, by calling (843)918-6000 or by visiting the Tickets page at MyrtleBeachPelicans.com.
