Winston-Salem Dash News Release
Winston-Salem, NC - Winston-Salem turned to their familiar recipe for success as they edged Myrtle Beach 4-3 in the series finale on Sunday evening at Wake Forest Baseball Park. Pulling out close contests is what guided the Dash to the first-half Southern Division title and has continued in the second half of the season as they are a league-best 23-11 in one-run games.
Dash starting pitcher Anthony Carter (10-4) tossed six strong innings and limited the Pelicans to three runs on five hits. Carter also struck out eight Pelicans and earned his league-leading 10th win of the season
The Pelicans scored first when Cody Johnson led off the second inning with a triple and Benji Johnson contributed an RBI ground out to put Myrtle Beach in front 1-0. The Dash answered right back in the bottom of the second inning as right fielder Salvador Sanchez launched a solo home run, his 11th of the season. Later in the inning, left fielder Kent Gerst lined an RBI double and second baseman Dale Mollenhauer added a run-scoring single to give Winston-Salem a 3-1 lead.
The Dash added a run when third baseman Brent Morel drove home Justin Green from second base with a single in the bottom of the third inning. It was Morel's team-leading 61st RBI of the season.
Myrtle Beach trimmed their deficit to one in the top of the fourth inning as Donell Linares smacked an RBI double and Gerry Rodriguez provided an RBI single. But that would be as close as the Pelicans would get as the Dash bullpen preserved the victory following Carters' departure after the sixth. Hector Santiago tossed 2.1 shutout innings and Miguel Socolovich recorded the final two outs
Myrtle Beach starter Brandon Beachy (2-1) worked three innings and allowed four runs on six hits to suffer the loss. He filled in for Jose Ortegano, who was recently promoted to Double-A Mississippi.
Winston-Salem will continue their six-game home stand by welcoming Kinston to Wake Forest Baseball Park for a three-game series beginning on Monday night. The Dash will send LHP Justin Edwards (2-2, 6.39) to the mound in the opener, while the Indians are expected to start RHP Paulo Espino (3-5, 3.20). The first pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.
Single-game tickets can be purchased online at www.wsdash.com or by calling the Dash office at (336) 714-2287.
