Hill City Howlers News Release
The Cats and Keys split a doubleheader on Saturday night with Frederick winning game one 3-2 and Lynchburg winning the night cap 4-3 in eight innings. The rubber match in the three-game series takes place on Sunday night at 6:00 p.m. at Harry Grove Stadium.
The Hillcats got on the board first in the opening frame of the first contest with an unearned run. Alex Presley reached on an error and came home on the sacrifice fly by Matt Hague.
The Keys responded quickly though with a three-run bottom of the first inning against Lynchburg's starter Jeff Locke to give Frederick a 3-1 lead. Caleb Joseph hit a three-run homer and Locke was chased from the game after only recording two outs in the game.
Jared Keel cut the two-run lead in half with a lead-off homer in the top of the second on the first pitch of the frame to make it a 3-2 contest.
That was still the score when play was halted due to the weather after the first half of the third inning. The Cats and Keys have had a history of rain this season with three games already rained out and one shortened due to the weather.
After an hour and 12 minute rain delay play resumed in the bottom of the third inning and no more runs would be scored in game one.
Locke (2-8) took the loss for Lynchburg (54-42) and reliever Eddie Gamboa (2-0) earned the victory for Frederick (45-51).
In game two both teams were held scoreless until the fifth thanks to Cats' starter Bryan Morris and Keys' starter Pat Egan. In the fifth though, Lynchburg plated three runs to take a 3-0 advantage. Kent Sakamato doubled home Kris Watts who doubled to start the frame, to make it 1-0. Eddie Prasch, who went 3-for-3 in game two, smacked a two-run double to dead center field to give the Green & Gold three runs in the frame.
The Keys wasted no time in responding with three runs of their own in the bottom of the fifth. Billy Rowell singled to get Frederick on the board and Pedro Florimon's two-run double tied the game at three a piece.
It stayed that way through seven-innings, forcing extra frames for the Cats for the third time in seven games. In the top of the eighth Matt Hague hit what proved to be the game winning single down the third base line to score Alex Presley and give Lynchburg a 4-3 lead.
R.J. Rodriguez nailed down the save for the Hillcats to earn his Carolina League leading 19 save of the season. Morris went six innings and allowed three runs to earn his first quality start of the season, but took a no-decision for his effort.
Harvey Garcia (1-0), who pitched a scoreless seventh, earned the win for Lynchburg (10-18, 55-42). Reliever Jake Stevens (3-6) took the loss for Frederick (14-14, 45-52).
The final game and rubber match in the three-game series will take place on Sunday night at 6:00 p.m. and lefty Justin Wilson (4-6, 5.91) will get the nod for the Hillcats opposite right-hander Sean Gleason (2-3, 4.28) for the Keys.
