Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Winston-Salem Dash fell 7-0 to the Greensboro Grasshoppers in the finale of a six-game series at Truist Stadium.
Taylor Varnell started for the second time in the set and struck out three batters through five innings while giving up one run on two hits and two walks.
The lone run given up by Varnell came in the fourth, as Liover Peguero doubled and scored on a fielder's choice double play to put the Hoppers on the board 1-0.
Edgar Navarro entered in the sixth and was met by Matt Fraizer who belted a solo blast over the right-center field wall to extend the Greensboro edge by one. A walk followed by two consecutive singles brought Lolo Sanchez in to score, further unraveling Navarro and extending the Greensboro lead to 3-0.
The Hoppers plated another in the eighth inning as Fabricio Macias singled, advanced to third on a double and crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly to left field.
Greensboro amped up the scoring in the ninth, beginning with a two-run homer by Aaron Shackelford, marking the 12th homer on the season for Shackelford. Three singles in a row thereafter scored Fabricio Macias to put the Grasshoppers ahead 7-0.
Winston-Salem ultimately came up short with the bats and the Greensboro Grasshoppers came away with a 7-0 shutout victory. J.C. Flowers (1-0) earned his first victory on the year, while Taylor Varnell (3-2) took his second loss. Greensboro took the series 4-2.
The Dash will venture to Asheville on Tuesday to face the Asheville Tourists, High-A affiliate of the Houston Astros, in a six-game series. The following week, The Dash and Greenville Drive go head-to-head in Greenville, South Carolina before the Dash return to Truist Stadium to face the Hickory Crawdads in a six-game series beginning July 6.
