Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WINSTON-SALEM, NC (JUNE 13, 2011) - Winston-Salem couldn't claw out of an early four-run hole and lost the series opener against Frederick 5-4 on Monday night at BB&T Ballpark. The loss for the Dash eliminated the team from contention in the Southern Division, and with the win Frederick wrapped up the Northern Division title.
Frederick (40-24) got on the board early and often against the Dash (29-35) and starter Andre Rienzo. In the first, Bobby Stevens reached on a single with one out and advanced to third base when Jonathan Schoop singled. Kipp Schutz followed by reaching base on an error from Daniel Wagner that also scored Stevens to put the Keys up by one.
The Keys struck for more in the second, as Tyler Kolodny doubled on the first pitch of the inning and came around to score after advancing to third on a passed ball and scoring on a wild pitch. The wild pitch was during Brian Ward's at-bat, and preceded a single into center field. Ward advanced to third base when Steve Bumbry singled. With Stevens at the plate, the Keys attempted a double steal. Wagner appeared to tag Bumbry out at second before Ward touched home plate, but the umpiring crew ruled that the run scored, extending the Keys lead to two.
Stevens came back in the third and led off with a single before moving to second when Schoop walked. Schutz followed with a groundout to first base that moved both runners into scoring position. Miguel Abreu drove in Stevens with a single and put Keys at the corners for Kolodny. For the second time, Frederick went for a double steal, and this time successfully stole second and home to move the score to 5-1.
Winston-Salem gradually chipped away at the lead against the Frederick bullpen. Keys starter Ryohei Tanaka allowed only one run in five innings. Jose Martinez tripled with one out in the sixth and eventually scored on Andy Wilkins' two-out infield single.
In the eighth, Ian Gac doubled with two outs against reliever Kenny Moreland. Chris Petrini then took over on the mound and surrendered a home run to Wilkins to pull the Dash within one. It was the ninth home run for Wilkins, who earlier in the day was named a Carolina League All-Star.
The Carolina League leader in saves, Sean Gleason, came in to throw the ninth and allowed the tying run to reach when Wagner singled and stole second base. Tyler Saladino struck out to end the ballgame, stifling the late Dash push.
Tanaka got the win after five innings. He gave up one run on three hits and struck out two. Rienzo was hit with the loss after he allowed five runs (all earned) on ten hits in 5.1 innings. Gleason earned his 18th save in 20 opportunities.
The loss for Winston-Salem eliminated the Dash from contention for the first half Southern Division crown. Winston had previously won four consecutive halves in the division. Meanwhile, with the win, plus a Wilmington loss, Frederick clinched the Northern Division championship in the first half.
Winston-Salem and Frederick continue their three-game series Tuesday night at BB&T Ballpark. RHP Ryan Buch (1-2, 6.35) will start for the Dash against RHP Oliver Drake (4-3, 2.84)
