June 13, 2011 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Frederick Keys News Release
Frederick, MD - Frederick Keys Outfielder Steve Bumbry and Left-Handed Pitcher Nick Haughian have been named Carolina League Players of the Week for the week of June 6-12. Over the week, Bumbry went 10-for-26 (.385) in seven games with five extra-base hits (three doubles, one triple, one home run). In addition, Bumbry drove in five runs, scored six times, and stole a base. In Haughian's lone start of the week, he scattered three hits over seven scoreless frames in the Keys' 6-2 win over Lynchburg on June 10. Haughian also struck out a season-high nine batters en route to his third victory of the season.
Bumbry got the 2011 campaign off to a slow start. Over his first 14 games of the season, the Cockeysville, MD native went just 4-for-36 at the plate. After a brief stint with Class-A Delmarva, Bumbry returned to Frederick on May 5 and has been on a tear ever since. Since his return to the Keys' lineup, Bumbry is 31-for-98 (.316) with 11 doubles, one triple, three home runs, and 12 RBI. Currently, he leads the Carolina League in on-base percentage (.414) and is third in the league in walks (33).
Selected by the Baltimore Orioles in the 12th round of the 2009 draft out of Virginia Tech, Bumbry spent the entire 2010 season with the Delmarva Shorebirds in the South Atlantic League. Bumbry led the Shorebirds in triples (9), was second on the team in batting average (.263), and third on the club in doubles (23).
Bumbry is the son of former Oriole, Al Bumbry. Al roamed the outfield for the Orioles from 1972-1984 and was named American League Rookie of the Year in 1973.
Similar to his teammate Steve Bumbry, Nick Haughian got the 2011 season off to a rocky start. Following his first five appearances, the Marysville, WA native had surrendered 15 earned runs over 14.2 innings pitched. Since then, however, Haughian has been stellar. Over his last 35.1 innings of work, he has allowed just eight earned runs. After six of his first eight appearances for Frederick were out of the bullpen, Haughian joined the Keys starting rotation on May 22. In his seven starts in 2011, Haughian is 2-2 with an ERA of 2.78.
The Orioles picked Haughian in the ninth round of the 2008 draft out of the University of Washington. As a Husky, he compiled an overall record of 12-13 in his three seasons in Seattle. As a junior, Haughian was 6-5 with a 3.76 ERA. He led the Huskies in complete games (3), shutouts (1), and strikeouts (107). His 107 strikeouts were also second-best in the Pac-10 in 2008.
Haughian spent all of 2010 with the Delmarva Shorebirds. After making 30 relief appearances to start the year, Haughian transitioned to a starting role on August 8. He made a total of five starts to finish out the year and compiled a 1-2 record with an ERA of 3.33. In his minor league career, Haughian has achieved more success as a starter than a reliever. Over 27 career starts, he is 8-9 with a 2.61 ERA.
