Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WINSTON-SALEM, NC - It was a night better-suited for actual pelicans than the ones at BB&T Ballpark on Friday, as the Dash slogged its way to an 8-2 win over Myrtle Beach on a wet evening in the Triad. Winston-Salem pounded out 15 hits and got big games from Jon Gilmore and Seth Loman to capture the series victory.
Although accustomed to overcoming early deficits lately, the Dash (10-5, 53-32) delivered the initial salvo in the first inning against Matt Crim. With Drew Garcia at first base and one out, Gilmore singled to right field. Unbeknownst to Garcia, Luis Sumoza misplayed the ball and Garcia stayed at second base. Gilmore did not see Garcia holding at second and was caught in a rundown between first and second base. Garcia then broke for third and made it there when first baseman Michael Jones' throw was off-target. Gilmore made it to second, and there were two aboard in scoring position with one out. Loman followed with a groundout to second, scoring Garcia to make it 1-0 Dash.
Myrtle Beach (6-10, 32-54) took the lead in the top of the third. Dylan Axelrod (4-1) loaded the bases with one out before giving up a base hit to Sumoza. Two runners scored and the Pelicans led 2-1.
The lead was short-lived for Myrtle, as Winston also plated a pair in the frame. Gilmore hit a rocket off the centerfield wall to score Garcia. Gilmore made it to third when the throw home bounced past the catcher. He scored on a single by Loman to put the Dash ahead 3-2.
The skies opened up after the fourth inning ended, and light, but persistent rain fell for the remainder of the night.
Winston-Salem added an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single by Jose Martinez to make it 4-2.
The Dash made things comfortable in the seventh against a tiring Crim (4-9). After Garcia walked, Gilmore drove him in with another double. Rocket Wheeler then summoned Tommy Palica to face Loman, who singled through the right side to bring home Gilmore. After Ozzie Lewis hit into a double play, Martinez blasted a solo home run to left field to complete the three-run inning. It was Martinez' second homer of the season and it gave Winston a 7-2 lead.
Eduardo Escobar's RBI single in the eighth inning finished off the scoring for the Dash.
Winston-Salem sent Charlis Burdie to the mound in the ninth, but he lasted only two pitches before leaving the game with an injury. Leroy Hunt finished the game with a scoreless frame.
Axelrod got the win, allowing two runs on six hits in six innings. Crim was the loser, surrendering six runs on ten hits in six-plus innings.
Six Dash players finished with multi-hit games. Loman went 2 for 4 with a game-high three runs batted in. He was also hit by a pitch for the 23rd time this season, one shy of the Carolina League record. Gilmore had a 3 for 5 night with two RBI and two runs scored. Martinez had his second straight 3 for 4 ballgame and has raised his average 132 points in the last two nights.
Garcia's seven-game hit streak ended with an 0 for 3 night at the plate, but he scored three times to help pace the Dash offense.
Winston-Salem continues its home stand with a three-game series beginning Saturday against the Lynchburg Hillcats. RHP Nate Jones (7-2, 4.64) opposes RHP James Avery (4-3, 3.40) in a 7 p.m. start. The audio broadcast begins at 6:45 on www.wsdash.com.
