Frederick Keys News Release
The Potomac Nationals (8-7, 39-46) completed the three-game sweep of the Keys (7-8, 48-37), 3-2, on Friday Night. Following a first inning that each team scored two runs, Potomac scored the only other run on the night in the top of the seventh. The sweep by Potomac is the first time Frederick has been swept at Harry Grove Stadium in 2010.
Most of the excitement on Friday night occurred during the first inning. After RHP Ryan Berry, retired the first two batters he faced, Berry walked C Derek Norris after being ahead in the count 0-2. The next batter, RF Michael Burgess, belted a Berry pitch deep over the leftfield fence for a two-run homerun. Burgess finished up the three-game set against Frederick with two homeruns and nine RBI.
Trailing by two runs before even coming to the plate for the third consecutive day, the Keys countered with a two-run shot of their own. Following a two-out double by RF Ronnie Welty, 1B Jacob Julius drove a Marcos Frias pitch deep to rightfield for his eight homerun of the season. Welty's double extended his hitting streak to 14 games as he has hit safely in every game since the All-Star break.
Neither team scored for the next five innings as both starting pitchers dominated after their initial inning. Ryan Berry finished up his outing after five innings. He allowed two runs on three hits, struck out six, and walked one in a no-decision. His counterpart, Marcos Frias, picked up his three win of the year after allowing two runs on five hits over six innings.
Potomac scored the game-winning in the top of the seventh against RHP Jose Duran. With the bases loaded and one down, SS Josh Johnson hit a sac fly to centerfield that brought 1B Tyler Moore from third. The sacrifice fly gave the Nationals a 3-2 lead they would never relinquish.
Frederick, MD native, RHP Dan Leatherman closed out the game for Potomac with a perfect bottom of the ninth.
The Keys will try to bounce back on Saturday night as they welcome in the Kinston Indians for a three-game series. Frederick will toss RHP Oliver Drake (2-4, 4.38) while the K-Tribe sends LHP T.J. McFarland (9-2, 1.94) to the hill. First pitch is set for 6:00 p.m. on Salute to the Orioles night at Harry Grove Stadium. There will be raffles for Orioles memorabilia as well as an appearance by the Oriole bird. In addition, the first 1,000 fans in attendance will receive a team card set of the Frederick Keys courtesy of Extra Innings.
