Kinston, NC (July 9, 2010) - On the verge of getting a chance to take the field at Fenway Park on Saturday, the Salem Sox fell flat in their quest for a three-game sweep over the Kinston Indians on Friday. The K-Tribe scored twice each in the second, fourth, and sixth innings, in addition to plating three in the fifth to gallop to an easy 9-0 shutout victory over the Red Sox at Grainger Stadium. Chun Chen bopped his first Carolina League home run for the Indians and Bo Greenwell went 3-3 to lead Kinston to the victory, improving the Tribe to 7-7 in the half and 43-41 in the season. The Sox were denied their 50th victory, falling to 49-37 and 7-9 in the second half.

Three Red Sox position players had good nights individually, but the clutch hit to make something happen was nowhere to be found. Tim Federowicz went 3-3 with a walk, Ryan Lavarnway went 2-3 with a walk, and Alex Hassan went 2-3 with a double, yet the rest of the Salem lineup combined to go 1-25 and 0-4 with runners in scoring position. In four separate innings, the Sox had two on with two out and came up empty.

Kinston teed off against Salem starter Caleb Clay, roughing him up for seven runs on 11 hits over four plus innings. Chen's solo homer to lead off the second inning broke the seal, and the Indians continued to pound Clay through the duration of his outing. After three straight hits and a walk to begin the fifth, Clay was chased in favor of Zach Hammes. The hard-throwing reliever once again struggled with his command, walking five over two innings in which he allowed two runs to score. Lance McClain tossed two scoreless to finish the game for the Red Sox.

Austin Adams blanked the Red Sox over five dominant innings, picking up his first Carolina League win while striking out seven. Marty Popham tossed the final four frames, earning his second save for the Tribe. Popham struck out six more Sox giving the Indians hurlers 13 strikeouts on the night. Adams and Popham each struck out Peter Hissey twice, as the Salem center-fielder finished 0-4 with four Ks.

With Friday in the rear-view mirror, the Salem Sox kick off an unprecedented Carolina League journey. Salem ventures to New England to compete in the 5th annual "Futures at Fenway" Doubleheader at Fenway Park. The Lowell Spinners take on the Jamestown Jammers at noon in New York-Penn League action, while the Salem Sox will battle the Potomac Nationals approximately 45 minutes after the conclusion of the opener. All-Star righthander Brock Huntzinger is expected to start for the Sox, while the Nationals counter with righthander Brad Peacock.

Fans can listen to extended radio coverage in the Roanoke Valley on Flagship Station NewsTalk 960 WFIR and online at www.salemsox.com, as "Voice of the Salem Red Sox" Evan Lepler calls the action from Fenway Park.
