Winston-Salem Dash News Release
FREDERICK, Md. - Despite a strong High-A debut from John Parke, the Dash could not overcome an early home run and lost 3-2 to Frederick at Nymeo Field on Wednesday.
Frederick (4-2, 38-38) struck in the bottom of the first inning. After back-to-back singles against Parke (0-1) to start the frame, Wilson Garcia socked a home run over the left-center field fence to give the Keys a 3-0 lead.
Winston-Salem (4-3, 45-32) had chances in the early innings, but stranded four runners on base - two in scoring position - through the first three innings.
Cristian Alvarado (7-5) tossed six shutout innings for Frederick, striking out eight without issuing a walk. He retired 11 of the last 12 batters he faced.
After allowing the home run to Garcia, Parke breezed through the Keys lineup. The southpaw retired 17 of the final 18 batters he faced, including the last 10 consecutive batters. He did not allow a baserunner after the third inning. The southpaw finished the night allowing three runs on four hits across six innings, tallying four strikeouts and zero walks in his High-A debut.
Winston-Salem mounted a comeback in the top of the eighth inning. After Luis Robert drew a two-out walk, Micker Adolfo, Gavin Sheets, and Mitch Roman collected three straight singles to cut the deficit to one. Yeyson Yrizarri was feet away from giving the Dash the lead with a home run, but Randolf Gassaway had just enough room in left field to make the catch on the long fly ball to end the threat.
Sheets finished the night 3-for-5 to extend his hitting streak to 11 games. His three hits ties a career high.
Tyler Erwin gave up one of the two runs in the eighth inning but pitched a perfect ninth frame to earn his seventh save of the season.
Winston-Salem's series against Frederick continues on Wednesday, when Dash right-hander Luis Martinez (4-4, 3.76 ERA) battles Keys righty Michael Baumann (4-0, 2.43 ERA). Pregame coverage begins at 6:45 p.m., and fans can catch all of the action on WSJS Sports (600 AM, 101.5 FM) and wsjssports.com.
