SALEM, VA - The Salem Red Sox failed to make the most of their many opportunities Wednesday night, falling 4-1 to the Carolina Mudcats as they took their second loss in a row at Haley Toyota Field.

The Red Sox (3-3, 35-39) came up with only one hit in 15 at bats with runners in scoring position, leaving 13 runners on base in the game. The Mudcats (4-2, 38-38) worked their way back to .500 on the campaign, and had a shutout intact until the bottom of the eighth inning.

Neither Salem nor Carolina could crack the scoreboard until the Mudcats struck in the top of the fifth against Salem starter Tanner Houck (L, 3-9). Pat McInerny cracked a one-out double, and a wild pitch by Houck brought him to third. Nathan Rodriguez flew out to shallow center for the second out, and it looked as though Houck might escape, but another wild pitch brought McInerney in to score. Devin Hairston squeezed out a walk, and Joantgel Segovia made the most of his opportunity, smashing an RBI triple to score Hairston and run the Carolina lead to 2-0. The Mudcats tacked on another in the top of the sixth, as Tucker Neuhaus belted a solo shot to center with one away to make it a 3-0 lead.

Carolina added an insurance run in the top of the eighth inning against reliever Algenis Martinez, who hit leadoff man Demi Orimoloye with the first pitch of the inning. Orimoloye pilfered second, and moved up to third when catcher Jordan Procyshen's throw skittered into center field. Neuhaus drew a walk to put runners at the corners, and Weston Wilson slashed a hard fly to left that Ryan Scott snared, but was deep enough to score Orimoloye to extend the advantage to 4-0.

After starter Braden Webb (W, 5-5) stifled the Red Sox through the first six innings, Salem finally broke through in the eighth against reliever Alec Kenilvort (H, 3). Bobby Dalbec earned a leadoff walk, and Hill singled him to second base with one away. Scott laced a single up the middle, and Dalbec raced home to score. After Trenton Kemp bounced into a 5-4 fielder's choice, Daniel Brown (S, 2) entered with runners at the corners and two outs, fanning Jordan Procyshen to end the inning. Brett Netzer earned a one-out walk in the ninth and Dalbec reached on a two-out single that brought the tying run to the plate, but Brown got him to ground out to second base to end the game.

Houck gave up three runs on five hits and a walk in 5.2 frames, fanning seven batters. Martinez surrendered an unearned run on a hit and a walk while whiffing one in 2.1 innings. Yankory Pimentel worked around two hits and a walk in one inning, striking out one batter.

The Sox will try to snap out of their skid Thursday night, with lefty Darwinzon Hernandez taking the ball for Salem against Carolina righty Alec Bettinger. First pitch at Haley Toyota Field is scheduled for 7:05 p.m., and the pregame show with Ben Gellman and Suzie Cool begins at 6:45 p.m. on the Red Sox broadcast network.
