Bristol State Liners News Release

A four-run seventh inning proved the difference on Monday night, as the Bristol Pirates dropped the series opener 8-5 against the Danville Braves.

The Braves jumped out to a 2-0 lead by the end of the first inning, but the Pirates tied the game in the top of the second on a two-out home run by left fielder Jean Eusebio. The Pirates then took the lead in the top of the third on back-to-back bases-loaded walks by center fielder Daniel Rivero and Eusebio. A single, a double and an error allowed four runs to score for Danville in the seventh, and the Braves extended their lead to 8-4 on a double in the bottom of the eighth inning. Shortstop Josh Bissonette scored on an RBI single by second baseman Jesus Valdez in the top of the ninth to cut the deficit to three, but the Braves retired the next three batters in order to end the game.

Matt Eardensohn dropped to 1-2 on the year after allowing three runs on six hits over 2 1/3 innings. Starter Dante Mendoza allowed three runs on four hits and three walks while striking out three over four innings, and Saul De La Cruz allowed two runs -- one earned -- while striking out two over the final 1 2/3 innings.

Designated hitter Samuel Inoa led the Pirates with a season-best performance -- finishing 3-for-4 with a walk, two runs and two stolen bases. Valdez and right fielder Jake Wright were the only other Pirates with multiple hits, as they each finished with two hits in the loss. Eusebio reached base in all three of his plate appearances, finishing with a home run and two walks while leading the team with three RBI.

The Pirates (20-24) dropped to fourth place in the Appalachian League West Division, but they remain 4 1/2 games behind Johnson City and 2 1/2 games behind Elizabethton after losses by the Cardinals and Twins on Monday. Adrian Florencio will start for Bristol in Game 2 after allowing three runs over his last 9 1/3 innings of work while striking out 10.
