Elmira Jackals News Release

Elmira Jackals rookie winger Keegan Dansereau collected his first professional hat trick on Sunday at First Arena in Elmira, N.Y., but the Jackals could not hold off the Toledo Walleye, who bounced back from a late deficit to win in overtime, 5-4.

Dansereau started the scoring at 5:54 of the first period, when his pass from the left wing side deflected off of a Walleye defenseman and went past the glove of Toledo goaltender Alec Richards to make it 1-0 in favor of the Jackals.

Toledo struck at 9:35 on a four-on-three power play, when Scooter Smith knocked in a rebound past Jackals goaltender Julien Ellis to tie the game 1-1.

Minutes later, Justin Donati used his 25th goal of the season to give the Jackals a 2-1 lead. Mat Robinson's shot from the blue line was stopped by Richards, but the rebound came to Donati in the right circle who poked it past Richards at 11:59 of the first period. The goal put Donati in a tie for first place in the ECHL's scoring department with Utah's Ryan Kinasewich at 64 points.

In the second period, Dansereau used a beautiful forehand-backhand deke to give the Jackals a two-goal advantage. He took a feed from Olivier Proulx, and beat Richards stick side to make it 3-1 at 8:57.

However, the Walleye clawed back. At 13:24, Dominic Osman fired a snap shot over the right shoulder of Ellis to make it 3-2, and in the third period, J.C. Sawyer tied the game at 2:53, as his shot edged over the goal line to make it 3-3.

The Jackals fought back though, regaining the lead on Dansereau's third goal of the game. With the Jackals on the power play, Proulx fed Dansereau in front who one-timed it past Richards at 9:10 of the third period to give the Jackals a 4-3 advantage.

The Walleye had one last comeback in them, as Chris Robertson's wrist shot from the right circle found the top right corner of the net at 16:07 of the third period to tie the game 4-4.

In overtime, Mike Hedden took a feed on the doorstep from Sebastian Piche and tapped the puck past Ellis to give Toledo its league-leading seventh overtime victory of 2009-2010, as the Walleye prevailed over the Jackals, 5-4.

Ellis fell to 9-3-0-1 with the Jackals, making 16 saves on 21 shots, while Richards improved to 12-5-0-3 on the season, stopping 34 of 38 shots.

The Jackals fell to 22-17-3-2 but moved to one point behind the Reading Royals for the top spot in the American East Division, as the Royals fell to Gwinnett at home, 3-2 in regulation. The Walleye upped their record to 25-16-1-3 in 2009-2010.

The Jackals stay at home for a game on Friday, Feb. 5 against the Wheeling Nailers at 7:35 p.m. The First Arena Box Office is open 10 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday-Friday. Fans can also purchase tickets by calling (607) 734-PUCK (7825) or can log onto Ticketmaster.com.
