Johnstown Chiefs News Release
Johnstown, PA - The Johnstown Chiefs were defeated by the Charlotte Checkers Sunday afternoon by a score of 3-2 at the UPMC Health Plan Ice Rink at the Cambria County War Memorial.
The Chiefs had an early opportunity in the first period with Brian Kaufman almost potting the first goal of the game but Charlotte Goalie Ryan Munce made a diving save to keep the game scoreless early. The Checkers were then able to take advantage of a power play late in the period. Andrew Carroll scored his 21st of the season at 16:50 with Aaron Slattengren and Michel Leveille registering the assists.
The Chiefs showed some spirit while shorthanded early in the second. Matthew Myers broke loose on a breakaway and fired the puck on Munce who turned it away. Sean Berkstresser was right there to collect the rebound out in front of the net and blast it in at 5:33 to tie the game up. It was Berkstresser's team-leading second shorthanded goal of the season. Moments later Chanse Fitzpatrick bounced the puck along the boards to Kaufman who fed it to Connor Shields. Shields made a spectacular move in front of the net and wrapped the puck around Munce for his 18th goal at 5:58 to put the Chiefs up 2-1. The Checkers answered back quickly. Tyler Doig gathered the puck and sniped in an unassisted shorthanded goal at 6:38 to tie the game 2-2. The game remained tied at the end of two.
It looked as though the Chiefs tied the game up early in the third with Fitzpatrick knocking in a rebound. The goal ended up not counting due to a high stick call on Kaufman during the play. The Chiefs looked to regain some momentum and were able to fight off two back to back penalties deep in the period to stay within one. However they were unable to capitalize on a Checkers penalty in the final minutes and took the 3-2 loss.
Murray took the loss and made 33 saves in the game. The Chiefs went 0-for-6 on the power play and 7-for-8 on the penalty kill.
