Atlanta Gladiators News Release
The Gladiators earned a 3-2 victory in a Sunday afternoon matchup against the Royals. Scott Mifsud snapped ties at two different points throughout the contest and helped the Gladiators to a 2-2 record on the four game road trip.
The Gladiators jumped out to the early one goal lead early on in the first period. Just past the six minute mark Aaron Brocklehusrt picked up a loose puck in his own zone as the Royals were attempting to make a line change. Brocklehusrt moved the puck out to Matt Francis who quickly fired a pass to Tim Miller. Miller kicked a puck off his skates and slid it between the pads of Matt Dalton to give Gwinnett the early lead.
Gwinnett would surrender yet another shorthanded goal while on their first power play of the game. A shot was blocked at the top of slot and Andrew Sarauer led a 2-on-1 up the ice. Sarauer quickly moved the puck across the slot to Marc Cavosie who fired it past a sprawling Danny Taylor to even the score.
Gwinnett was able to answer before the end of the period. Dan Sullivan knocked a pass from Tim Filangieri out of mid-air and stick-handled his way into the zone. Sullivan found Scott Mifsud streaking down the slot, and Mifsud picked the top right corner of the net to regain the lead for Gwinnett.
The Gladiators went 0-3 on the Applebees power play in the first period while Reading had no man-advantage opportunities. The Royals' Matt Dalton stopped 19 of 21 shots in the first frame.
The Royals struck first in the second period as Ben McLeod tied the game while on the power play. Ryan Crane held a puck in at the left point and moved towards Sarauer on the half-boards. Sarauer dropped it to McLeod who walked out of the corner and flipped a backhand over the glove of Taylor to tie the game.
Scott Mifsud broke the tie to regain the advantage for Gwinnett just 1:05 later on the Applebees power play. Adam Berti grabbed a pass from Scott Mifsud and moved it across the ice to Matt Caruana on the leftwing side. Caruana fired the puck at the net where Mifsud was there to redirect it into the net. Mifsud's second goal was scored at the 16:38 mark of the second.
The Gladiators killed off three penalties in the third period including 31 seconds of 5-on-3 and Danny Taylor stopped all thirteen shots in the final frame as Gwinnett held on for the win. The Gladiators finished 1-5 on the Applebees power play and Reading notched one goal in five chances as well. The Gladiators improved to 20-19-3-2 with the win and the Royals fell to 23-18-1-3. Danny Taylor stopped 36 of 38 shots against to earn the win.
