Hamilton Tiger-Cats News Release
Hamilton, Ontario - The Hamilton Tiger-Cats have announced that quarterback Danny McManus has been named their nominee for the CFL 2005 Tom Pate Award.
The Tom Pate Award is given to the player who best shows the unique combination of outstanding sportsmanship and dedication to the community.
"There isn't a more deserving individual for this award than Danny," said head coach Greg Marshall. "He is a leader inside the locker room as well as in the community."
On the field, the future Hall of Fame quarterback is one of only three CFL players ever to throw over 50,000 yards and currently holds several Tiger-Cats career records. Off the field, Danny is an active member of the Hamilton community as he volunteers his time with many local hospitals and charity organizations.
"Whether it's for throwing the ball or visiting a hospital, Danny always deflects the praise to others," said 2000 Tom Pate Award winner Mike Morreale. "Everyone knows what kind of athlete and what kind of quarterback Danny has been in this league, but nobody really knows what kind of person he truly is. No one gives more of their time or cares more about others than Danny, but you will never hear him talk about it."
The Tom Pate Memorial Award is named after the former Tiger-Cats player who suffered an aneurysm during a game at the age of 23 in 1975. Pate never regained consciousness and died two days later.
Mike Morreale (2000) and Henry Waszczuk (1983) are the only Tiger-Cats to have won the award. Senior Director of Football Operations Ron Lancaster won the award in 1977 as a member of the Saskatchewan Roughriders.
