5 Things to Know about #DALvRSL

Homegrown Derby

Saturday's match features two clubs with similar philosophies. Both Dallas and Real Salt Lake believe in building from within by developing and playing Homegrown players. In 2019, the clubs set an MLS record when they played a combined 12 Homegrown players in one game (RSL played seven, FCD played five). Last game, FCD started two Homegrown players (Eddie Munjoma and Tanner Tessmann) and a further three entered the game as second-half substitutes (Dante Sealy, Ricardo Pepi and Paxton Pomykal).

Luchi Gonzalez vs. Freddy Juarez

FC Dallas vs. Real Salt Lake will also a feature a clash of two old friends. FCD head coach Luchi Gonzalez and RSL head coach Freddy Juarez did their coaching educations together and followed a similar pathway of coaching youth soccer to eventually leading teams at the professional level. Although they still keep in touch often, Luchi made it clear that on game day it will be a "war" regardless of their off-the-field friendship.

Formation Fluidity

Although the season is young, FC Dallas has already used a variety of formations. Through its five games so far, Dallas has lined up in a 3-4-3, 4-3-3 and 3-5-2 formation depending on its available personnel and opponent. While Luchi typically reverts to a 4-3-3 for home matches, this season's formation fluidity means it's tough to predict how FCD will line up game to game.

Against Real Salt Lake

FC Dallas' all-time regular season record against Real Salt Lake is 20-12-9 (60 goals for, 46 goals against). Dallas' home record against RSL is 13-1-4, with its lone defeat coming back in 2013 at Toyota Stadium. Last year, FCD and RSL faced off once and played to a scoreless draw at Rio Tinto Stadium.

About Real Salt Lake

Real Salt Lake began 2021 in fine form, recording back-to-back wins over Minnesota United FC and Sporting Kansas City to open the season. Since then, the club recorded a 2-1 defeat to San Jose Earthquakes and played to a scoreless tie against Nashville SC last time out.
