Winston-Salem Dash News Release
Winston-Salem, NC - Dale Mollenhauer raced home from second base on an infield ground out in the bottom of the ninth inning to help Winston-Salem sneak past Frederick 5-4 on Saturday night at Wake Forest Baseball Park. The victory improved the Dash to 26-12 in games decided by a run, which is the best such record in the Carolina League.
With the game tied at four going to the bottom of the ninth, Mollenhauer led off with a single against Keys reliever Brandon Cooney and stole second. With one out, Seth Loman hit a bouncer to first that was gloved by a diving Robbie Widlansky, who shuffled the ball to Cooney covering the bag. Loman was ruled out, but Mollenhauer was able to take advantage of the slow developing play to race home from second. He slid under the tag of catcher Caleb Joseph, which touched off a dugout-clearing celebration at the plate.
Winston-Salem hurler Charlis Burdie (1-0) tossed 1.2 innings of shutout relief with three strikeouts to earn his first win in the Carolina League. Cooney (0-1) also worked 1.2 innings, but allowed the game-winning run to suffer his first loss with the Keys.
The Dash grabbed an early lead when shortstop Greg Paiml reached on a fielder's choice with two outs in the second inning. Designated hitter CJ Lang followed with a double down the left field line that scored Paiml from first base. Winston-Salem added a run in the third when center fielder Justin Greene tallied an infield hit and scored on Brent Morel's RBI double to put the Dash in front 2-0.
The Keys knotted the score with a pair of runs against Justin Edwards in the top of the fourth inning. Brandon Waring smacked an RBI double and Widlansky collected a run-scoring infield single to even the score at two.
Frederick went ahead for the first time at 3-2 in the top of the sixth when Caleb Joseph launched a solo home run. The Keys lead was short-lived as Salvador Sanchez led off the bottom of the inning with a solo shot off Nate Nery. The line drive home run was the 14th of the season for the Dash outfielder. Later in the frame, Tyler Kuhn chased Nery from the game with an RBI single that plated Paiml and gave Winston-Salem a 4-3 advantage. Matt Tucker connected on a solo blast for the Keys in the top of the seventh inning which squared the game at four.
Both starting pitchers were effective although neither figured in the decision. Nery lasted 5.1 innings and allowed four runs on nine hits while Edwards was solid over 7.1 innings and limited Frederick to four runs on eight hits.
Winston-Salem and Frederick conclude their four-game series on Saturday evening at Wake Forest Baseball Park. The Dash will send RHP Gregory Infante (1-1, 8.00) to the mound, while the Keys are expected to start RHP Kenny Moreland (2-0, 3.14). The first pitch is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
