Round Rock Express News Release
HOUSTON - Houston Astros General Manager Ed Wade announced three roster moves Tuesday that affect the Round Rock Express. The Astros have placed right-handed pitcher Chris Sampson on the 15-day disabled list, purchased the contract of right-hander Casey Daigle and designated right-hander Evan Englebrook for assignment.
Daigle will be in uniform for the Astros for Tuesday's game against the Washington Nationals. The Englebrook move makes room for Daigle on the Astros 40-man roster. As a result, the Astros have 10 days to dispose of Englebrook's contract via trade, release or outright assignment.
In his second season with the Express, Daigle posted a 1-1 record this season with a 2.96 ERA and seven saves. He had 23 strikeouts against only five walks in 24.1 innings over 20 relief appearances. Daigle is tied for fifth in the Pacific Coast League in saves; all seven of his saves came in the month of May, tied for the best total that month in the PCL. He posted a 0.57 ERA over 15.2 innings of work for the Astros in seven Spring Training appearances.
Daigle, a first-round supplemental pick of the Arizona Diamondbacks in 1999, returns to the Majors for the first time in four years. He made 20 appearances, including 10 starts, for the Diamondbacks over the 2004 and 2006 seasons.
Englebrook was 0-1 with a 6.46 ERA in 16 relief outings for the Express. He allowed a .287 opponents' batting average with 14 walks against 23 strikeouts over 23.2 innings. Englebrook allowed at least two earned runs in five of his last seven appearances for the Express.
Sampson, who underwent an MRI Tuesday at the Methodist Hospital in Houston, is 0-0 with a 6.30 ERA in 20.0 innings over 22 relief appearances for the Astros this season.
In another move Tuesday, right-handed relief pitcher Gary Majewski was activated from the 15-day DL. Majewski is 2-2 with one save in 14 relief outings for the Express. He has posted a 6.48 ERA with seven strikeouts against nine walks over 16.2 innings.
Round Rock returns home Tuesday, opening its fourth home stand of the season with a four-game series against the Iowa Cubs. First pitch for Tuesday's series opener is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. CDT at The Dell Diamond. Right-hander Sergio Perez (1-0, 3.21 ERA) is scheduled to start for the Express.
