Alex Gordon doubled, homered and walked twice, leading the Omaha Royals to a 9-2 win over the New Orleans Zephyrs in the series opener Tuesday night.

Gordon, the second overall selection by the Royals in the 2005 draft, hit an RBI double in the fourth inning, stole third base and scored, keying a three-run frame that put Omaha ahead to stay.

He also walked in the first and fifth innings, and blasted a deep home run to right field in the seventh off Hunter Jones (0-4), who relieved starting pitcher Sean West in the second inning and was dealt the loss, surrendering seven runs - six earned - on nine hits in 5 1/3 innings.

West, a graduate of Shreveport's Captain Shreve High School, was making his first start of the year and was on a pitch count, exiting after 59 pitches, 36 of which were strikes. West gave up three hits and walked two in 1 2/3 innings, but struck out four of the five batters he retired.

Gaby Hernandez (4-4) pitched seven innings for Omaha, allowing two runs on five hits and striking out six.

Trailing 1-0 in the third, the Zephyrs knotted the score on an RBI ground out by Bryan Petersen, cashing in Lee Mitchell's leadoff double.

Donnie Murphy homered the next inning for the Z's, his team-leading ninth of the season, and third in his last four games.

The series continues Wednesday night at Zephyr Field, with Rick VandenHurk getting the start for the Zephyrs, and Jorge Campillo taking the mound for Omaha. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.
