D.C. United News Release
Washington, D.C. (June 2, 2006) - D.C. United will continue its United Drives initiative, a community relations program, during United's home game against the New England Revolution on June 3. United Drives will be starting its June schedule, in which it will be collecting canned goods for the Capital Area Food Bank. Along with the game against New England, United Drives will collect canned goods at home games against the Chicago Fire on June 21 and the Kansas City Wizards on June 24. Kick-off for all three matches is set for 7:30 p.m. at RFK Stadium.
"June is National Hunger Awareness Month, and unfortunately the issue of hunger in the Washington, D.C. area is an extremely important one," said Catherine Marquette, D.C. United's Director of Community Relations and Executive Director of United for D.C. "One in three kids go hungry in D.C., and D.C. United is pleased to do something as simple as collect canned food at three home games in an effort to contribute to an eradication of this problem."
At all D.C. United home games, the United Drives booth will be located outside of RFK Stadium's Gate A and will open two hours prior to kickoff, closing 15 minutes into the first half. Any fan who donates an item will receive, as a thank you from the club, a "Buy One, Get One Free" ticket voucher good for any D.C. United regular season home game as well as a United promotional item. The remaining collection schedule can be found below.
Throughout June, D.C. United will be collecting canned goods and other non-perishable food items to benefit the Capital Area Food Bank. The Capital Area Food Bank is a public nonprofit hunger and nutrition resource that distributes surplus food to hunger-relief organization in the Washington, DC area. Additional information about the Capital Area Food Bank can be located at capitalareafoodbank.org.
In May, United Drives collected soccer equipment to benefit United for D.C. and its United Soccer Club as well as DC SCORES. In April, United Drives collected new children's books to benefit United Reads, a program under United for D.C.
